The Faculty of Education and Lifelong Learning in Waterford is pleased to announce the launch of a new research project exploring the impact of student teacher assessment on professional practice.

The research will examine how the assessment of student teachers influences the professional development, teaching strategies, and reflective practices of Practice Placement Supervisors (PPS).

As key partners in the preparation of future educators, PPS play a central role in assessing professional teaching practice across our Level 8 and Level 9 Teacher Education Qualification programmes. This research seeks to critically examine how engaging in assessment shapes supervisors’ own pedagogical approaches and professional growth.

Professional development session

To coincide with the launch of this research, the Faculty of Education and Lifelong Learning recently convened a professional development session attended by a panel of nearly Practice Placement Supervisors.

The session brought together supervisors from across our Level 8 and Level 9 programmes to strengthen alignment in assessment practices and to further support the effective delivery and evaluation of teaching practice.

Strengthening collaboration

Dr Valerie Brett, Academic Lead for the Level 8 Teacher Education qualifications at SETU stated, “As principal lead for this research project, this work reflects the Faculty of Education and Lifelong Learning’s continued commitment to enhancing the quality of teacher education, fostering reflective professional practice, and strengthening collaboration with our dedicated supervisors who support and mentor our student teachers.”

This research will deepen research-informed practice and develop the partnership between the Faculty of Education and Lifelong Learning and the Practice Placement Supervisors in shaping the next generation of educators.
