Erasmus information sessions are held each semester and provide essential guidance on studying abroad, including application steps and timelines. Details of these sessions are shared with relevant students throughout the year, and students are encouraged to get in touch with any questions. Hearing from past Erasmus participants and reviewing student reports can also help inform your decision.
The Erasmus application process begins in the academic year prior to your intended mobility, so early planning is essential. For Carlow and Wexford-based students, a competitive selection process may apply where demand exceeds available places. In these cases, applicants for Erasmus+ funding must submit a personal statement as part of their application.
Students choose their destination and partner institution through the SETU Mobility Programmes Portal, where all available universities can be explored. Application support is available from the SETU Global Office via email.
Depending on your programme, an Erasmus academic mobility typically takes place in Year 2 or Year 3. Most students study abroad for one semester (approximately five months), while some programmes offer the option of a full academic year abroad (around nine months).
The application window for this year are the dates represented in the box below. Dates are updated annually before the next cycle commences.

Proof of Language Proficiency (If applicable)
If you plan to study in a country where many of your chosen modules are not taught in English, you may be required to provide evidence of language proficiency. Check the host institution’s requirements carefully and upload a valid test result if needed.
Personal Statement (Carlow and Wexford Students only)
As part of the competitive process, Carlow and Wexford-based students must write 200-300 words explaining why they wish to go on Erasmus.
All Erasmus applications are reviewed by SETU Global and then forwarded to the relevant academic departments for a final decision. Students can expect to be informed of the outcome of their Erasmus+ application by mid to late March.
Study mobility students who are successful are formally nominated by SETU to their host institution. For Semester 1 outgoing students, nominations usually take place between late March and mid-May, while Semester 2 nominations typically occur between late September and late October.
Once nominated, students must complete the host institution’s own application process. Instructions are generally provided by email or made available on the host institution’s website. If the application is submitted correctly and on time, an official Letter of Acceptance is usually issued within 4–6 weeks.
It is important to note that Erasmus places are not confirmed until a formal offer letter is received from the host institution. Students must also remain registered with SETU and pay the annual registration fee while studying abroad. However, Erasmus students do not pay registration fees at the host institution.
