Bealtaine Living Earth Festival Photography Competition

Celebrating the launch of the SETU Sustainability Strategy, we’re excited to announce our SETU student and staff photography competition, ‘Through a Greener Lens’,  part of the Bealtaine Living Earth festival in association with Calmast.

This competition invites SETU students and staff to submit photographs linked to biodiversity, nature restoration and sustainable development.

Whether you shoot on a professional camera or your phone, we want to see the world through your lens.

Participant Information and Terms and Conditions

1. Who can enter:

  • The competition is open to all SETU staff and students with a valid email address.
  • Entry is free and voluntary.

2. Competition categories:

  • All entries must show a clear link to biodiversity, nature restoration, sustainable development, or sustainable action.
  • A prize will be awarded in each category, plus one Grand Prize for the Best Overall Photograph.

The categories are as follows:

  • Landscape and Nature
  • Black and White: Fragile Earth
  • In Action: Sustainable Living
  • Portrait: Faces of Sustainability
  • Innovation and Engineering for Earth

3. How to enter:

  • Each participant can submit one photograph maximum per category at the link above.
  • Each submission must contain one photograph only.
  • Photographs must be submitted through the official SETU online form.
  • Each entry must include the participant’s name, email address, status as student or staff, selected category, photograph title, and a short description.
  • Accepted file formats are JPEG and PNG.
  • Images generated by artificial intelligence will be disqualified
  • Maximum file size is 20 MB per image.
  • Only light editing such as cropping, exposure, and contrast are allowed
  • Photomontage or added elements are not allowed.
  • Photographs must have been taken within the last 12 months.
  • Images must not contain watermarks, logos, or promotional branding.

4. Entry requirements:

By submitting a photograph, the participant confirms that:

  • the photograph was taken by the participant
  • the photograph is original and does not infringe copyright or any other third-party rights
  • any identifiable person shown in the image has given permission, where required
  • the image is suitable for a university competition and does not contain offensive, discriminatory, defamatory, violent, or otherwise inappropriate content
  • the image is connected to the competition theme

5. Selection of winners:

  • After the submission deadline, eligible entries will be reviewed by a judging panel.
  • The judging panel will choose one winning photograph in each category and one Best Overall Photograph across all categories.
  • The judging panel's decision will be final.
  • Winners will be announced during/after the Living Earth festival.
  • A prize will be awarded in each category, plus one Grand Prize for the Best Overall Photograph. This grand prize will be a voucher for a bicycle shop to purchase or put towards purchasing a bicycle. 

6. Image use and rights:

Participants keep ownership of their photographs.

  • By submitting a photograph, the participant grants SETU a non-exclusive, royalty-free right to use, reproduce, publish, display, and share the image in connection with:
  • The Living Earth Biodiversity Festival
  • SETU communications
  • SETU sustainability and sustainable development initiatives
  • This permission applies to non-commercial use only.
  • SETU will credit the photographer where reasonably possible.
  • Submitted images will not be sold or licensed for commercial use through this competition.

7. What participants accept by entering:

  • By sending a photograph through the official form, the participant confirms that they have read and accepted these rules.
  • The participant also accepts that SETU may review the entry for eligibility, display shortlisted or winning images, and use submitted photographs for the non-commercial purposes listed in this document.
