SETU has signed a new Smarter Travel Charter with Transport for Ireland (TFI). TFI Smarter Travel is a behavior change programme working with third level institutions to implement voluntary campus travel plans that promote and encourage sustainable and active commuting. Through the programme, SETU is working with students and employees to facilitate more sustainable travel choices resulting in better access, enhanced student and employee wellbeing, reduced costs, reduced carbon emissions, and more effective parking management.

Cycle to Work Scheme

The Cycle to Work Scheme is available to SETU employees to purchase a bicycle and associated equipment, tax-free, up to a certain value. Find out more here:

Bicycle Parking
Bicycle parking is available to the front and rear of the College Street Campus. 

Facilities
Shower and locker facilities are available for use located in the Dance Studio (just past the chapel).

On the main campus, there are numerous areas where bicycles can be parked

  • At the side of the Tourism and Leisure building
  • Between the Administration building and the Engineering corridor (opposite the Security Office)
  • Outside the Gallery Restaurant directly opposite the Walton IT building
  • Bicycle Shelter (between Gallery Restaurant and Walton IT Building)
  • The left-hand side of the Library entrance 
  • Outside the Transport Office (Beside Clubs and Socs)
  • The exit to the back car park

Facilities 
Showers are available for use in the O'Connell Bianconi (Health Sciences) Building.

 

Bicycle Parking

Bicycle parking is available in numerous areas as follows:

  • Covered bicycle shelter at the back of the Nore Building
  • Between the Haughton and Burrin Buildings
  • At the end of the Haughton Building
  • Between the Barrow Centre and the Killeshin Building
  • At the entrance to the Killeshin Centre
  • Engineering side of the Nore Building

Bolt bike docking stations are available beside the entrance to the Dargan Centre and another between the Haughton Building and the Burrin Building.

Facilities

Changing facilities, showers and lockers are available in the Barrow Centre for SETU students and staff.

Bicycle Parking

There are two bicycle parking areas located beside the main car park beside the Sports Building.

A Bolt bike docking station is available just inside the main gate of the South Sports campus

Limited bicycle parking is available on the Summerhill Road Campus – outside the main entrance.

Bicycle parking is available to the front of the SETU Arena, the SETU's Xcelerate Centre and Netlabs building in Carriganore.

Shower facilities are available in the SETU Arena for SETU Students and Staff.

Waterford Campuses:

TFI Bike Stations

TFI Bikes is a self-service bike rental service, with stations conveniently located throughout Waterford City, making it easy to get around, whether it’s for commuting to work, meeting friends, or doing some sight-seeing.

There are 14 Bike stations and 220 bikes located in key areas around the city, including at SETU, University Hospital Waterford, Bank Lane, Kilcohan and Arundel Square.  These bikes will allow commuters to switch to more active ways to get to and around the City Centre.

With docking stations at several SETU Campus locations, students will have plenty of opportunities to use them to travel to and from the city centre.

Bolt e-bike docking stations are available on: 

  • The Kilkenny Road Campus has two docking stations, one beside the entrance to the Dargan Centre and another between the Haughton Building and the Burrin Building
  • The South Sports Campus 

How to Rent an E-Bike 

  1. Find a Ride – Locate a nearby e-bike on the street or through the map in the BOLT app.
  2. Unlock & Ride – Download the BOLT app from the Google Play Store or App Store, add your card details, and unlock an e-bike.
  3. Park Responsibly – At the end of your ride, return the e-bike to one of the designated parking zones shown in the app. 

Cost 
E-bikes cost €0.18 per minute to hire. 
Note: E-bikes are available for individuals aged 18 and over only. 

Where Can E-Bikes Be Used? 
The service is available 24/7 and operates within a designated zone in Carlow Town. All bikes are geo-tagged and will only function within the approved area. 

  • Beginner Mode: Limits top speed to 15 km/h (great for first-time users)
  • Standard Mode: Allows speeds up to 25 km/h
  • Go-Slow Zones: Speed automatically reduced to 15 km/h
  • No-Go Zones: E-bikes cannot be operated or parked in these areas 

In order to get your card programmed to access the bicycle shelter (located between the Gallery Restaurant and Walton IT building) you must complete the form below (either print the form or pick one up in the Estates Office) and return it to the Estates Office on the Cork Road Campus. 

  • Access will only be granted to current students and staff (proof of ID may be required) 
  • Students will only be granted access for the current academic year
  • Bicycles must be secured in the Bicycle shelter using a D lock
  • Bicycles should not be left in the shelter overnight
  • Please ensure to close the door behind you, any issues can be reported to Security on 0879400888 or to [email protected] 
  • SETU cannot accept any responsibility for bicycles damaged or stolen whilst using the bicycle shelter

EV charging facilities are available at the Cork Road Waterford campus in the back carpark and at the Kilkenny road Carlow campus, located just behind the new NZEB corporate services building.

The Waterford Greenway is a spectacular 46km off-road cycling and walking trail along an old railway line between Waterford and Dungarvan.

With the Greenway now in full operation, it can be accessed through the free front carpark (Zone 2) of the SETU Arena. 
Bike hire is available with Greenway Waterford Bike Hire which is located at WIT Arena reception.

Waterford City bus service

The city bus operated by TFI and Bus Éireann features a variety of routes across the city. Both the W1 and W2 bus stop at the Cork Road campus.

Other bus routes in Waterford City include W3, W4, W5, 360/360a

Carlow Commuting service

Carlow is easily accessible via public transport.

The town bus service features 2 routes across the town, with services running every thirty minutes from 6am to 12am seven days a week. Journeys cost €1.10 for adults, 55 cents for students and free travel cards are also be accepted. 

CW1 runs from MSD, Dublin Road to Tyndall College, Kilkenny Road with CW2 running from Wexford Road Business Park to Barrow Valley Retail Park, Graiguecullen.
