Share the journey to SETU
SETU is piloting a Carpooling Scheme at the Cork Road Campus in Waterford and Kilkenny Road Campus in Carlow.
The pilot aims to encourage staff and students to share their journeys to campus, helping to reduce single-occupancy car journeys and associated carbon emissions while making more effective use of available parking.
Approved carpool groups will have access to designated carpool parking as part of the pilot.
Who can take part?
The pilot Carpooling Scheme is open to SETU staff and students travelling to the Cork Road Campus in Waterford or Kilkenny Road Campus in Carlow.
To participate, a carpool group must:
- have a minimum of four registered members and a maximum of seven;
- carpool together on at least three days per week;
- nominate one person as the Carpool Leader; and
- meet the requirements set out in the SETU Carpooling Scheme Regulations.
How does the Carpooling Scheme work?
Getting started is simple:
1. Form your carpool group
Get together with colleagues or fellow students who are interested in sharing their journey to campus. Your group will need to meet the eligibility requirements of the Carpooling Scheme.
2. Contact SETU Estates
Nominate a Carpool Leader and contact the relevant Estates Office in Waterford ([email protected]) or Carlow ([email protected]) to begin the registration process.
3. Complete your registration
Estates will provide the information and forms your group needs to complete the registration process.
4. Application review and approval
Estates will review your application and let you know the outcome. Approved groups will receive information about their designated carpool parking arrangements and permits.

How many people need to be in a carpool group?
A carpool group must have a minimum of four registered members and may have up to seven members.
How often do we need to carpool?
Participating groups are expected to carpool on at least three days per week.
Does the same person have to drive every day?
No. Members can share driving responsibilities. Members who intend to drive can provide their vehicle details as part of the registration process.
Does everyone in the group need to register?
Yes. The Carpool Leader registers the proposed group. The other members are then contacted individually by the relevant Estates Office and invited to complete their own registration.
What if I want to participate but don't have a carpool group?
You can register your interest in finding a carpool [hyperlink to the “Find a SETU Carpool” MS Form] and we'll explore potential matches with others travelling from a similar area and at similar times. Your contact details won't be shared without your permission.
What happens if someone leaves our carpool group?
Members can leave a carpool group at any time. The Carpool Leader should notify SETU Estates of any membership changes. If the group falls below four qualifying members, a replacement member will need to be recruited for the group to remain eligible.
Does registering guarantee a carpool parking space?
No. Applications are assessed by SETU Estates and are subject to the eligibility requirements of the scheme and the availability of designated carpool spaces. Approved groups that are allocated a space will have access to designated carpool parking, subject to compliance with the scheme regulations.
How will my personal information be used?
Personal information collected through the registration process will be managed by SETU Estates and used to administer and evaluate the Carpooling Scheme.
Information may also be used in anonymised and aggregated form to help SETU understand the environmental benefits of the pilot.
