The Department of Applied Sciences at SETU is proud to announce a successful partnership with Kamala Nehru Mahavidyalaya (KNM), Nagpur, India through its first internationalisation-at-home project, funded by SATLE.
The collaboration which ran during the second semester of 2025, brought students from the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Pharmaceutics and Drug Formulation at SETU together with KNM students from the Department of Biotechnology, India. Students presented their joint projects to academics from both universities with the prizes awarded to the best-performing teams. For many, it was their first time engaging in such a global exchange. One student summed up the novelty of the project by saying, “It was something different that we never did before.”
Learning across Borders
The project was a part of SETU’s commitment to producing graduates who are global citizens while supporting equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) principles. The collaboration gave students the chance to work together online on protein extraction and the development of protein-rich products, blending laboratory work in Ireland and the data analysis with the product concepts from India. Irish students were introduced to Ayurvedic product ideas suggested by their Indian peers. Together, the teams experimented with creating protein balls (ladoo).
The collaboration went far beyond scientific experiments, blending hands-on experimentation with scientific discussion and showcasing how science is approached in different countries. This unique experience gave students opportunities for personal growth, innovation and teamwork. They also gained international exposure, cultural exchange and the chance to strengthen their technical skills. One student reflected, “I loved working with international students, sharing our culture." Another added, “Working with my team member from abroad took me out of my comfort zone.”
Leadership and Partnership
The project was designed and initiated by Dr Adriana Neves, Lecturer in the Department of Applied Sciences at SETU. The partnership was supported by the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by Dr Thomaé Kakouli-Duarte, also of the Department of Applied Sciences formalising this international academic link.

Building Lasting Connections
Students kept in touch through a shared WhatsApp group, which became a hub for exchanging ideas, supporting one another and even forming friendships that continue beyond the project. “It was a great experience”, the student remarked. Another said, “I have a great time collaborating, looking for another opportunity.”
The initiative also provided professional benefits, helping students strengthen their CV’s, develop teamwork and communication skills and gain confidence in presenting research. This ongoing connection allows them to stay updated on scientific developments and seek advice from peers abroad.
As one student put it, “Would like to do the same type collaboration again.”
Looking Ahead
SETU’s Department of Applied Sciences and KNM believe this collaboration as a strong foundation for future joint projects. With protein research rapidly growing in Biosciences, the partnership ensures students are engaged with global trends and prepared for careers in an interconnected scientific world. This initiative shows how international collaboration enriches education, fosters cultural exchange and inspires the scientists of tomorrow.
