SETU hosted its Guidance Counsellor Information Day to give attendees an insight into SETU’s expanding portfolio of programmes, research activity, industry partnerships, and graduate opportunities.
Guidance counsellors carry out the important work of supporting students along their future study and career paths. The event created a space for them to meet SETU’s team and learn about the University’s latest updates and opportunities on offer to future college-goers across the region

Student belonging and wellbeing
Attendees heard from Dr Laura Keane, Director of Student Life and Experience, and Tom Grinsell, Student Volunteering and PVA Co-ordinator. They shared their insights into how SETU new initiatives are designed to enhance student’s experience. Initiatives such as peer mentoring and student volunteering form part of the established community at SETU that puts students at its heart.
Paths of Possibility: Graduate story from SETU
Attendees heard first-hand how SETU graduates are shaping the future and making extraordinary things happen every day. This segment featured graduate stories from Chloe Chelmiah, SETU PhD researcher in XR and design education, who has also studied at undergraduate and master’s level with the University. Chloe was followed by Justin House, SETU business graduate and Global Logistics Program Manager at Eaton Industries.
Current and future skills needs in Ireland’s south east
The day also included a presentation by Dr Helen Murphy, Head of Faculty of Education and Lifelong Learning, which provided an overview of the main skills needs per industry sector across the region, using recent research completed by SETU. The segment highlighted areas of future skills need based on emerging trends and data from national sources.
Understanding engineering at SETU
The morning concluded with a tour by Dr Frances Hardiman, Head (Carlow) of Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, of the world class engineering facilities at SETU. This included showing attendees the University’s dedicated aerospace building, flight simulator, and concrete and hydraulic labs.
The event concluded with a networking lunch, giving counsellors the chance to engage directly with SETU staff and explore collaboration opportunities.
