Students registered with the Disability Office who have been recommended Assistive Technology (AT)  during their needs assessment can contact the Assistive Technologist, Janet O'Neill 051-845516 or [email protected] to arrange further training. Below are some examples of Assistive Technology available to you.

ClaroRead Pro

ClaroRead helps students to be more confident, independent and productive learners by providing an effective suite of reading, writing and study tools.  ClaroRead is available to all students registered with the Disability Office.

ClaroRead Chrome extension (Free)

ClaroRead Chrome Extension provided Text-To-Speech functionality in Google Chrome. ClaroRead for Chrome also supports reading, writing and studying on Chromebooks. The ClaorRead extension is found in the  Chrome Web Store and can be install through the link provided below.

Immersive Reader

Immersive Reader is a free text to speech tool available in Microsoft Office 365 apps such as Word, PowerPoint, OneNote, Teams and MS Edge. MS Office 365 is available free to current staff and students in SETU. To use Immersive Reader in Moodle remember to log into Moodle using the MS Edge Browser.

 

Glean Recording Software (Only applicable to students that have been granted this support at their Needs Assessment)

Glean is a note taking solution that records audio notes so that students can capture and learn more effectively.

 

Electronic Reader in Word (Text to Speech)

The 'Speak' feature in Word 2016 makes reading word documents more accessible. It is ideal for people with dyslexia and other learning difficulties, or anyone whose first language is not English. Adobe Reader DC Electronic Reader (Text to Speech)

Adobe® Reader® DC  is Free software with a read out loud function that uses the text-to-speech voices on your computer to read PDF files out loud. It is ideal for people with dyslexia and other learning difficulties, or anyone whose first language is not English. Voice Typing (Speech to Text)

You can type and edit by speaking into Google Docs. This feature is ideal for students with dyslexia and or a physical disability where typing might be difficult.

This feature is Free, it is available in Google Chrome. You  must ensure that your microphone is working and turned on. Devices and microphones vary, so check your computer manual for instructions. Microphone settings are typically in the System Preferences on a Mac, or the Control Panel on a PC. You will also need a gmail account and access to the internet.

 

Ginger

Ginger Software is great for people with dyslexia and other learning difficulties. Thanks to the electronic reader, the online grammar checker, punctuation, spell checker and  tools which can automatically detect and correct misused words and grammar mistakes.  Ginger is available to all students and can be downloaded for Free from http://www.gingersoftware.com/  Free version has limited functionality.  Students that have been recommended 'Ginger' at their Needs Assessment will have access to the Ginger Premium Edition, where they can enjoy all of the features of the software.

 

C-Pen (Reader Pen)

The C-Pen Reader is perfect for people with dyslexia and other learning difficulties. The C-Pen reads aloud printed text from books, manuals or handouts. The C-Pen Reader features a high quality speaking voice. The C-Pen makes reading content more accessible to all. It and fluency and enhances comprehension. The C-Pen Reader also contains high quality electronic dictionaries. The C-Pen Reader is small, portable, and easy to carry with you anywhere you like to read.

 

Dragon

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 speech recognition software lets you accomplish more on your computer — quickly and accurately — using your voice. Dragon Premium turns spoken words into text and executes voice commands much faster than you can type so you can your productivity potential at work, school or home.

 

Microsoft Office Lens

Microsoft Office Lens is Free, Office Lens trims, enhances, and makes pictures of whiteboards and documents readable. You can use Office Lens to convert images to PDF, Word and PowerPoint files, and save to OneNote,  One Drive, or your local device.
