Biography
With extensive experience in research, teaching, project delivery and project management, Dr. Sergio Botelho Junior works as the Education Research Officer in the School of Education and Lifelong Learning. He supports the School's research strategy by working in collaboration with the School management team and academic researchers in the implementation of the School's research strategy, particularly in identifying regional, national and European funding opportunities, contributing to research proposals, research reports and research project deliverables and outcomes as well as assisting in the development and roll out of the relevant School research support and knowledge sharing initiatives.
Sergio has a comprehensive teaching background, having served as a full-time lecturer in Brazil from 2013 to 2014. His teaching expertise spans a diverse range of modules, including Statistics, Mathematics for Business, Introduction to Economics, Market Research, and Introduction to Administration. His educational endeavours have consistently focused on innovative and impactful approaches. Sergio has effectively designed and delivered various short courses, covering topics such as innovation, creativity, Corporate Social Entrepreneurship (CSE), Social Innovation, and Entrepreneurship. Furthermore, he has made significant contributions to the development of cutting-edge curricula, including a CSE curriculum, a Problem-Based Learning curriculum, and a curriculum centred around Public Entrepreneurship.
Sergio is a dedicated researcher with a profound interest for exploring the dynamics of regional development, innovation entrepreneurship, and knowledge spillover. His doctoral research was centred on understanding the intricate processes of knowledge spillover within regions and the consequential impact on fostering innovation. Sergio has actively contributed to various EU-funded projects, bringing his expertise to the following initiatives:
Public:START: Within the Erasmus+ Public: Entrepreneurship as a Response to Complex Challenges (Public:START) Project, Sergio played a vital role in enhancing the innovation capabilities of the European Public Sector, particularly in addressing complex social challenges aligned with the SDGs. His responsibilities encompassed managing project deliverables, conducting research activities such as interviews, focus groups, and surveys, and actively participating in course design. Sergio was instrumental in developing the Public Start tool, a practical guide for tackling complex challenges through gamified digital visualisation and e-learning courses based on European digital transformation and climate change priorities.
DIFUCH: Sergio contributed significantly to the Erasmus+ Digital Future Challenge-Based Learning in Higher Education (DIFUCH) Project. His work centered on conducting research for project outcomes and designing the Curriculum Centre. This framework aimed to engage regional stakeholders in co-developing a curriculum that incorporates digital future challenge-based methodologies aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
M2PI: In the Erasmus+ Processes and Products Innovation Master (M2PI) Project, Sergio took part in designing an international Product and Process Innovation master (MI2P) program involving three European HEIs. His responsibilities included preparing and delivering modules that enriched the learning experience.
EMBRACE: Sergio made substantial contributions to the ERASMUS+ Knowledge Alliance EU-funded European Corporate Social Entrepreneurship (EMBRACE) Project. His role involved managing deliverables, conducting research, administering project tasks, managing finances, and disseminating results. His research tasks ranged from interviews and focus groups to surveys and course design, contributing to the project's comprehensive curriculum development.
SME/HPC: Sergio actively participated in the Erasmus+ Knowledge Alliance EU-funded Enabling SMEs to gain a competitive advantage from the use of HPC (SME/HPC) Project. His responsibilities encompassed qualitative research through interviews and focus groups within project deliverables. He also managed coordinating activities, supported partner tasks, prepared reports, and organised international conferences and meetings.
eDIGIREGION: In the FP7 EU-funded Realising The Digital Agenda Through Transnational Cooperation Between Regions (eDIGIREGION) Project, Sergio contributed to the creation of an ecosystem for research, innovation, creativity, and commercialisation across four European regions. His role involved assisting in the timely delivery of project outputs, organising international conferences and meetings, and conducting quantitative and qualitative research to inform policy documents.
In Brazil, Sergio worked as a consultant on various projects aimed at assisting companies, particularly small businesses, in achieving innovation and expanding their international footprint. His tasks included conducting assessments of the current business landscape, devising action plans with specific objectives, and providing comprehensive support to ensure the successful execution of these plans.
