Dr Kate McCarthy

Kate teaches a range of practice-based and theory-based undergraduate modules in the Dept. of Arts, primarily on the Theatre Studies and Visual Art programmes. Her teaching, learning and assessment philosophy is informed by three interrelated approaches: the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), Teaching for Understanding (TfU), and Universal Design for Learning (UDL).

Kate co-supervises IRC GOIPG scholar Aaron Kent's PhD: 'Re-shaping narratives: An analysis of life and culture as dramatised by Irish women playwrights following the Irish War of Independence (1922-1959)' with Dr Úna Kealy. Kate was nominated as a Teaching Hero (National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning) in the 2020-2021 academic year. In 2016, Kate was a co-recipient (with Dr Kealy) of the Teaching Excellence Award. 

Research interests

The arts in education, radical contemporary theatre practice, neglected playwrights who identify as women such as Teresa Deevy and Mary Devenport O'Neill, and Waterford's Magdalene Laundry and Industrial School.

Kate is a member of the Feminist Research Working Group (International Federation for Theatre Research), the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, the Irish Society for Theatre Research, the Arts Education Research Group (Trinity College Dublin), Women in Research Network (SETU), and PLACE (Practice-Led, Active & Creative Engagement) working group (School of Humanities, SETU).

Ongoing research projects

IBSA Project (PI: Dr Jennifer O'Mahoney, SETU): Responding creatively to image-based sexual abuse. This project works with SETU students and staff and supports them in creating artistic responses in different media to counter the occurrence of IBSA, recognising that students and staff can be strong allies in challenging rape culture. The artistic responses will be curated as part of an online exhibition on the project website. Thie project us funded by the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Fund (SETU).

Lyrical Bodies (PI Dr Úna Kealy, SETU), 2022-2027, investigates Waterford playwright Teresa Deevy’s ballet Possession, a work never yet performed, to explore and analyse ableism and gender discrimination towards the Irish Deaf community and Deaf woman via theatre practice research. The project considers how deafened playwright Teresa Deevy reflected on the socio-cultural environment of the mid-twentieth century. This project is funded by the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Fund (SETU) and Research Connexions (SETU).

The Waterford Memories Project (PI Dr Jennifer O'Mahoney, SETU) comprises an oral history, digital humanities project that investigates the Waterford Laundry and Industrial School. This project has multiple research outputs, each funded by different organisations including the Irish Research Council, Creative Ireland, and Waterford City and County Council.

Completed research projects

Letters from the Past (with Dr Úna Kealy) constitutes an inter-generational archival project researching the correspondence between Waterford playwrights Teresa Deevy and James Cheasty.

Generation Climate Change (PI Dr Kate McCarthy, SETU) in collaboration with Curious State theatre company. This project provided young people in Waterford city and county with opportunities for creative, critical, and reflective thinking about the climate crises and examined drama education and the Mantle of the Expert approach as a critical pedagogy. This project was funded by Creative Ireland, Waterford.

Theatre Practice & Collaborations

2023:

• June-December: Ongling collaboration with Dr Milo Obourn (SUNY Brockport, US) culminating in an online collaboration about The Possession Project between 2nd year Theatre Studies students and 2nd year Disability Studies students in October.
• Working with 3rd year Theatre Studies students, Kate directed Mary Devenport O'Neill's ballet-poem, Bluebeard at the Theatre Royal Waterford on 4 May. 

2022: 

• As part of the Waterford Imagine Arts Festival, Kate directed 2nd year Theatre Studies students in Teresa Deevy's Within a Marble City, which was performed as a rehearsed play reading at The Reg as part of the History and Heritage trail and at Theatre Royal Waterford in November.
• With SETU faculty and staff, Kate collaborated and performed with Amanda Coogan, Lianne Quigley, and Alvean Jones of Dublin Theatre of the Deaf as part of 'The Possession Project'. This work was performed at the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin, on 16 June 2022, and as part of the Waterford Imagine Festival on 27 October 2022.
• Other recent work includes a collaboration with Curious State Theatre and Street Spectable company to create work for SprÓg (Garter Lane Arts Centre, 2020 and 2021), and to co-facilitate a series of drama and theatre workshops exploring the impact of climate change (Generation Climate Change, 2019). These worshops were funded by Creative Ireland and Waterford City and County Council.
• In October 2016, with performance artist Dr Áine Phillips, Kate curated a series of performances for an IRC-funded project entitled When Silence Falls (PI Dr Jennifer O'Mahoney, WIT). As well as facilitating solo and ensemble work by theatre studies and visual art students over several years, recent live art performances include Out of Time (2016), a collaborative piece entitled 12 Steps (2016) with theatre studies students and staff, and Expelling Saturn (2015) with Michael Beirne performed at SOMA Contemporary Gallery (now GOMA), Waterford.
