Biography
Dr. Aidan Duane is a Lecturer in Information Systems in the Faculty of Business in SETU Waterford. Currently, Dr. Duane lectures in Programming, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, Data Modelling and Analytics.
Dr. Duane graduated with a PhD (2009) and an Master of Science (1999) in Information Systems by Research from University College Cork and a Master of Education in Teaching and Learning from Waterford Institute of Technology (2021).
Dr. Duane has won numerous awards for teaching and research over the past number of years. In June 2026, Dr. Duane was awarded the SETU Faculty of Business Teaching and Innovation Award. In June 2025, he was co-awarded the SETU Faculty of Business Teaching and Innovation Award. In May 2025, Dr. Duane also led the BIS Group to a Garda Group Award for Community Work in association with ALONE and The Vodafone Foundation. In June 2024, Dr. Duane was awarded the Best Research Paper Award at the 10th International Conference on Higher Education Advances (HEA'd) in Valencia, Spain. Dr. Duane was also shortlisted for the WIT Teaching Excellence Award in 2021 and 2015. Dr. Duane was awarded the SETU Excellence in Postgraduate Supervision Award in 2017. In 2019, Dr. Triona Bartholin and Dr. Duane as her PhD supervisor, were recognized for the Best PhD Student Paper at the Academy of Management, Human Resources Division International Conference (HRIC). In 2014, Dr. Duane and Dr. Philip O'Reilly (UCC) won the Best Paper in the Technology Management Stream at the Irish Academy of Management. In 2013, Dr. Duane, Dr. Philip O'Reilly (UCC) and Dr. Rajendra Prasath (UCC) won the Best Poster at the Asia Information Retrieval Societies (AIRS) in Singapore.
Dr. Duane is the former Programme Director of the Bachelor of Business in Business Information Systems (BIS) (2020-2026). The BIS degree was awarded funding under the Higher Education Authority (HEA) Human Capital Initiative (HCI). Dr. Duane previously held the post of Programme Director of the MSc in Global Financial Information Systems (GFIS) (2012-2016). GFIS was the first Master's programme in Ireland to be funded under the Springboard Government of Ireland fund. In 2014, GFIS was a Runner-Up for Best Course of the Year at the Postgrad Ireland Awards and previously shortlisted in 2013. Prior to this, Dr. Duane held the post as Co-Programme Director of the BA in Business Information Systems from (2000-2006).
Dr. Duane has served as a Lead Research Supervisor for the Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA), the Master in Business (MBS), and the Master of Science (MSc). Dr. Duane previously served as a Workshop Lead for 10 years on the Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA). Dr. Duane has received research funding from the Higher Education Authority (HEA) - N-TUTOR Research Grant (2023); Higher Education Authority of Ireland (HEA), Strategic Alignment of Teaching and Learning Enhancement (SATLE) Research Grant (2023) and the Higher Education Authority (HEA) Research Connexions Research Grant (2022). From 2012-2016, Dr. Duane worked as an investigator on the B-MIDEA Software Project (Business Modeling Intelligent Design Evaluation Application), co-hosted by WIT and University College Cork (UCC), and funded by Enterprise Ireland. Dr. Duane also served as Principal Investigator (PI) on the Blockchain Insurance as a Service funded by Enterprise Ireland in 2020.
Dr. Duane has presented and published his research in over 75 international journals and conferences including the Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development (JSBED); International Journal of Information Management (IJIM); Australasian Journal of Information Systems (AJIS); Information Systems Journal (ISJ); Electronic Journal of Business Research Methods (EJBRM); Journal of Advances in Higher Education (JAHE); Electronic Markets (EM); Irish Journal of Management (IJM); Behaviour and Information Technology (BIT); VINE Journal of Information and Knowledge Management Systems; International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS); European Conference on Information Systems (ICIS); and Australasian Conference on Information Systems (ACIS).
In 2025, Dr. Duane was awarded an N-TUTORR Fellowship Partner. In November 2024, Dr. Duane and his BIS research group were selected to represent SETU and present a GASTA at the N-TUTORR National Showcase in the Dublin Convention Centre. In April 2024, Dr. Duane and his BIS research group presented their Fellowship contribution as Partners in Innovation and Change at the N-TUTORR National Showcase in Croke Park Dublin entitled "Can Artificial Intelligence Complete My Assignment? A Student Led Initiative to Stress Test the Academic Integrity of 3rd Level Course Work Using AI". In February 2024, Dr. Duane was also awarded a Universal Design in Teaching and Learning (UDL) Credential by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.
Dr. Duane also served as the External Examiner for the UCC, GMIT, DBS and NCI while also serving on new programme evaluations committees for Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI). He also served as a School of Business Board Member at WIT. Dr. Duane also served as a Director at the Waterford Leader Partnership (WLP).
Dr. Duane is the Director of Reveal IT (www.revealit.ie). Reveal IT is a non-profit organization committed to offering free digital skills training to older people in our community.
Teaching
