Wexford native Elizabeth DoranBurke returned to SETU after years in the workforce, reigniting her creativity and discovering new opportunities in design, marketing, and community leadership.
Elizabeth DoranBurke’s graduation with a BA (Hons) in Visual Communications and Design from SETU was more than an academic milestone - it was a personal triumph. As a mature student, she brought a wealth of life experience, determination, and a passion for creative expression to her studies.

“I wanted to combine what I’d already learned in life and work with new digital and creative skills. The Visual Communications and Design course stood out because it was so forward-thinking - covering everything from creative studio and web design to digital marketing and entrepreneurship. It was exactly what I was looking for.”

A journey built on experience and passion
Before joining SETU, Elizabeth had spent over a decade in creative and technical roles. She worked at The Eco newspaper, where she gained invaluable experience in communications, advertising, and page layout — the spark that first ignited her interest in visual design. Later, during her time at Datapac, she expanded her technical understanding of print processes and IT systems.
Inspired by these experiences, she founded LDB Designs, her own graphic design business in Enniscorthy.
“Running my own design business was a dream come true,” she said. “When the pandemic hit, it gave me time to reflect and that’s when I realised, I wanted to formalise my skills with a degree and push myself further.”
A thriving return to education
Returning to college was not without challenges, but Elizabeth quickly found her rhythm at the Wexford Campus. “I hadn’t written an essay in decades, but the support from tutors and classmates made it so much easier,” she recalled. “The continuous assessment style kept me motivated - every project helped me grow creatively.”
Her commitment to campus life was notable. Elizabeth served as a class representative, Student's Union campus officer, and Peer Mentor, supporting fellow students as they settled into college life. She also founded the Crochet Society, a creative community inspired by her grandmother’s craft. “We were all equals, learning and encouraging each other,” she reflected.
A creative career ahead
In her role as the PR and Marketing Intern at SETU, Elizabeth is thriving, applying her design and photography skills daily to showcase the vibrancy of student life. She is committed to advancing her career in the creative industries.
“SETU gave me the confidence to believe in my abilities. This degree wasn’t just about learning design - it was about rediscovering who I am and what I’m capable of. I can’t wait to see where the next chapter takes me.”
