South East Technological University (SETU) student Siobhán was nominated for the Dairymaster award due to the work she put in during her final year thesis which she completed during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Siobhán O'Donovan, a past pupil of Schull Community College, Schull, Co. Cork is one of two students at SETU to be awarded the Dairymaster Student Award. The 4th year student is studying Agricultural Science. We chat with her following the awards ceremony.

The nomination

I was nominated by my college lecturers. This award was based on our final year thesis project and presentation from which six peers and I were shortlisted. Dairymaster then proceeded to evaluate each project from which two winners were picked.

My Project was titled 'An Investigation into the Development of a Pre-Ruminant Digestion System through the Parameters of Colostrum Quality, Feeding Management, Diet and Health Effects.' Zerlina Pratt supervised my thesis. I am honoured to be a recipient of such an award as I know my year group set a very high standard. I was not expecting to be recognised for such an award, however, I am delighted that my long hours and dedication on such a project has been recognised.

Grateful

A massive Thank you to Dairymaster for their continuous support of SETU's Ag Science course. To be recognised alone was a huge achievement for me, but winning is a feeling like no other. The academic year was very challenging for us all. Thank you to our lecturers and supervisors who went above and beyond to help us through our final year and support us no matter what the day or hour.

Hopes

I hope to delve into the agri industry to which I can apply my wide range of knowledge gained from my time at SETU while also broadening my knowledge. Agriculture is a sector that is consistently expanding, with that comes with a high demand for efficiency. I hope to be able to offer solutions to such demands through my keen interest in nutrition.
