South East Technological University (SETU) proudly announced the success of students Gemma Lanigan and Emmet Townsend on winning both the ‘Engineering and Innovation’ and ‘Sub Category: Product Design’ awards at the Smarter Travel Student Awards on 25 April, 2024. Both Gemma and Emmet are currently enrolled on SETU’s Bachelor of Arts in Product Design Innovation at the University’s campus in Carlow.

The Smarter Travel Student Awards invite participants to develop projects that support sustainable and active travel to, from, and on campus.

The project developed by Gemma and Emmet, entitled Boundary Beam, impressed the judging panel with its innovative approach and tangible impact on promoting sustainable travel behaviours among the university community. Boundary Beam is a personal safety device showcasing the recommended 1.5 metre distance vehicles should abide by while overtaking cyclists.
