SETU welcomed Ukrainian Ambassador Larysa Gerasko for an event focused on strengthening connections between Ukraine and Ireland through culture, diplomacy, and friendship.
The visit highlighted SETU’s commitment to supporting its international student community and fostering meaningful cultural exchange. On arrival, Ambassador Gerasko was greeted by David Denieffe, Chief Operations Officer at SETU, Fr Martin Smith, SETU Chaplain, and members of the Ukrainian Student Society, creating an opportunity for engagement across the University community.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Gerasko reflected on the importance of international cooperation, particularly in challenging times, and emphasised the role of education, culture, and building strong and lasting relationships between countries.

Students played an important role throughout the event. A presentation from the Ukrainian Student Society outlined its work in promoting Ukrainian culture and supporting students at SETU. The event continued with a panel discussion chaired by Fr Martin, with Ambassador Gerasko and SETU students, Ihor Melashchenko, Anastasiia Lysiak, Vladyslav Trushkovskyi, and Yelyzaveta Aralova.

The panel explored the strong ties between Ukraine and Ireland. Students shared their experiences of studying in Ireland, Ukraine’s diplomatic work, integration into Irish society, and the importance of preserving cultural identity while planning their future careers. A Q&A session provided further opportunity for open dialogue between attendees and the Ambassador.

The visit also included cultural elements and an exhibition, entitled 'Brave', featuring documentary photography by the Ukrainian duo LIBKOS, reflecting everyday realities since the full-scale invasion, and 'Unissued Diplomas', which honours Ukrainian students who lost their lives in the war.
The University continues to support students from diverse backgrounds while fostering collaboration, equality, and innovation across its campuses.
