Ussama Nabeel, from Pakistan with an engineering background, reflects on a transformative return to master's study at SETU in cybersecurity and industrial networking.
Ussama Nabeel was drawn to the unique blend of industrial networking and advanced cybersecurity when he began the Master of Science in Industrial Networks and Cybersecurity at SETU. He described it as the ideal programme to connect his professional background as an engineer with the skills needed to succeed in a rapidly evolving industry.
Speaking about the course, Ussama said, “I felt this course was the best way to enhance my skills and expand my career in multi-dimensional roles, from fieldwork to research and development.”
Return to study
The decision to return to education came after a 13-year gap, having completed his Bachelor’s Degree in 2011. Initially hesitant, especially about programming modules, Ussama reached out to faculty for advice before finalising his choice.

“The Engineering Department encouraged me and helped me to put faith in myself. Their support made my decision easier.”

Hands-on learning
A highlight from his master's was its strong focus on real-world applications. Field-based projects, practical labs in networking and control systems, and cybersecurity challenges linked to industrial scenarios brought the course to life. After such a long break from study, returning to formal research and completing a dissertation was daunting for Ussama, however, the experience proved to be transformative.
A home away from home
Ussama described SETU as “a home, far from home,” highlighting the warm and welcoming atmosphere. He said, “People here don’t just point you in the right direction - they will walk with you until your problem is solved. That kind of support makes all the difference.”
Continuous growth
Looking to the future, Ussama planned to return to the jobs market but admitted the possibility of further study was never far away.
He said, “After finishing my dissertation, I felt a desire to pursue further study in Zero Trust Architecture for Industrial Control Systems”, a direction, he is still considering. "Maybe one day I will be a formal student again - but in truth, I am always learning."
