For one SETU graduate, a lifelong fascination with technology and design paved the way to a thriving career in pharmaceutical device development.

After completing the Master of Science in Innovative Technology Engineering, Jordan Neville, from Wexford, joined Teva Pharmaceuticals as a Research and Development (R&D) Device Engineer, and now also lectures part-time at SETU.

Passion for technology

Jordan’s interest in engineering began in his school days, where technology was always his favourite subject. He said, “I loved both the theory and the hands-on work; using machines like laser cutters, lathes, and bandsaws was really engaging. I was also drawn to learning about how advanced technologies are applied in real-world contexts, particularly in the biomedical and manufacturing industries.”

Following the completion of a Higher Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Bachelor of Engineering in Manufacturing Engineering and Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Manufacturing Engineering at SETU, Jordan felt that completing his Master’s degree was the natural next step.

Academic highlights

One of Jordan’s standout experiences on the course was the exposure to biomedical science and engineering.

“I got to learn about drug delivery systems and cutting-edge technologies being used in medical device design. That knowledge is now something I apply daily in my role at Teva.”

Another highlight for Jordan was his final year project. Not only did it deepen his insight into the industry, but it also led to two academic publications, both of which were presented at international conferences.

Participating in student life

Beyond the classroom, Jordan thrived within the SETU community. As Chairman of the Engineering Society, he organised industry talks and graduate panels to connect students with industry professionals. He also served as class representative at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, giving him the opportunity to develop leadership skills and represent student voices.

Travel opportunities further enhanced Jordan’s experience; with visits to the Airbus factory in Hamburg, Volkswagen in Bratislava, and BMW and MAN in Munich where he saw large-scale manufacturing in action.

A future in industry and education

Since graduating, Jordan has balanced a career working as an R&D Device Engineer and part-time lecturer, teaching Lean Manufacturing, Quality Management, and Software Control at SETU.

“The Masters opened so many doors for me. For anyone looking to progress in engineering and gain industry-relevant expertise, I couldn’t recommend it more.”
