SETU, in partnership with the Irish Defence Forces, has launched the publication, ‘From Collaboration to Capability’, at a special launch event held in the United Nations Training School Ireland (UNTSI), at the Curragh, Co. Kildare.
The publication features the essays of learners from SETU’s Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Leadership, Management, and Defence Studies, and the B.A in Leadership, Management and Defence Studies (Logistics).

This is the second publication of its kind featuring the work of 15 Irish Defence Forces personnel who have completed bachelor’s programmes with SETU over the last decade. Featured essays explore key themes arising from military experience; from technology training and operations to health and logistics. They offer invaluable insight from personnel that is grounded in real-world experience.
As the second publication arising from this collaboration, it showcases the strength of the partnership between the Irish Defence Forces and South East Technological University in supporting professional and academic development.
“We are delighted to be able to celebrate the work and achievements of our learners through this publication. We are proud to support this work and to contribute to a culture of inquiry that strengthens professional practice and academic development. SETU’s collaboration with the Irish Defence Forces continues to build capability, not only in systems and processes, but in people, leadership and ways of thinking.”
Anne Meaney Head of Extended Campus, SETU

"This welcome publication highlights the Defence Forces' continuing commitment to lifelong learning. Those contributing to ‘From Collaboration to Capability’ have successfully combined their operational experience with academic study, to produce work that offers valuable insights across a range of contemporary military and organisational topics, while also developing themselves personally and professionally as scholars in the profession of arms.”
“The Defence Forces' long standing strategic partnership and collaboration with South East Technological University continues to play an important role in supporting the professional development of Defence Forces personnel, helping to build the knowledge and leadership capabilities required to meet future challenges. I congratulate all of the contributors on this significant achievement."
Major General Johnny Whittaker Deputy Chief of Staff (Operations), Irish Defence Forces
SETU has a longstanding partnership with the Irish Defence Forces, recently strengthened by the awarding of €1million to the university by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) to deliver the ‘System Performance Framework 2023–2028: Education Pathways for Defence Forces Personnel’ project. The project will pioneer advanced learning, digital upskilling, and accredited progression routes for Irish Defence Forces personnel.

The scale and ambition of the project is remarkable as it is the first time a technological university will work with the Defence Forces to create bespoke, accredited higher-education pathways for personnel, building on the existing collaboration between the two partners.
