SETU representatives joined other higher education institutions across Ireland to promote a more carer-inclusive sector. This collaborative work took place at the inaugural conference of HEI Carers Network at University College Dublin (UCD).
Established in 2024, the HEI Carers Network brings together representatives from across the higher education sector to share expertise, inform policy and practice, and develop coordinated supports for staff and students with caregiving responsibilities. The network reflects a growing recognition of the challenges faced by those balancing academic and / or professional commitments with caring roles.

"SETU is proud to work with colleagues across higher education to help create a more inclusive and supportive environment for family carers at third level. At SETU, we have seen the real-world impact on family carers over the past number of years as they have taken part in bespoke and accessible programmes of study at the University.
We know first-hand the positive effects that access to higher education can have on those with caring roles and it is vital that we work together as a sector to continually build upon that access.”
Nicola McEntee Project Lead, SETU
The conference, held during National Carers Week, marked an important milestone as the first national forum dedicated to carers in higher education. It brought together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and individuals with lived experience of caring, to explore practical approaches to supporting carers across Irish campuses.
With over 600,000 family carers in Ireland, initiatives such as the HEI Carers Network play a vital role in promoting wellbeing, widening participation, and ensuring equitable access to education and employment.
SETU looks forward to continuing its engagement with the network and contributing to the development of inclusive, evidence-informed supports for carers across the higher education sector.
National Carers Week is an annual awareness-raising campaign which recognises and celebrates family carers.
