SETU recently hosted an information event at its Kilkenny Road campus in Carlow for prospective students with intellectual disabilities, along with their families and support networks.
The event provided a comprehensive overview of the Certificate in Applied Skills Development, as applications open for the next intake of the one-year Level 6 programme this September.

Attendees received details on course content, student supports, campus life, and progression opportunities, as well as insights from the learner experience. The event also allowed visitors to meet staff, ask questions, and explore what participation in the programme involves.
The event follows the successful delivery of the programme’s first year in Carlow. The Level 6, one-year initiative is also delivered at SETU’s Waterford campus and has seen strong engagement since its launch in 2024 with over 34 students participating currently.

The Certificate in Applied Skills Development is designed to support people with intellectual disabilities to access and participate in higher third level education in an inclusive university environment. The programme enables learners to experience university life alongside their peers, while developing practical, personal, and academic skills that promote independence and progression.
“Our goal with the Certificate in Applied Skills Development is to create meaningful opportunities for students with intellectual disabilities to access and succeed in higher third level education. This programme is about building confidence, developing practical skills, and supporting each student to progress in a way that reflects their own goals and ambitions.”
Niamh Spratt-O’Shea, Lecturer in the Department of Health and Sport Sciences at SETU.
The initiative is part of a Higher Education Authority (HEA) PATH 4 (Phase 2) funded pilot scheme, supporting wider national efforts to expand inclusive pathways into higher education, delivered across SETU’s campuses in Carlow and Waterford.
Flexible learning supporting student success
The programme covers key areas including communication skills, health and wellbeing, personal and professional development, inclusive communication, and preparation for work placements, with learning designed to be practical, engaging, and relevant to students’ lives.
Beyond the classroom, students have opportunities to grow in confidence and experience through a wide range of activities. These include field trips, participation in college and community events, and the development of self-advocacy skills — including speaking at events and sharing their perspectives.

One student described their experience of the programme as “life-changing,” highlighting the impact of the opportunities and connections developed throughout their time at SETU:
“I would definitely recommend this course to anyone with an intellectual disability. It has been life-changing for me - there are so many great opportunities, and I’ve made friends for life.”
Ongoing support at SETU
SETU provides structured, person-centred support for students throughout their studies, beginning with orientation activities that help learners become familiar with campus life, build confidence, and develop independent routines. The programme uses a range of inclusive teaching approaches, including visual and experiential methods such as PhotoVoice, to support different learning styles. Students are supported to develop independence, social and communication skills, and practical abilities, while accessing tailored supports where required.
