SETU hosted the annual Further Education Progression Pathway Workshop for 2025 on Thursday 8 May, at its campus in Carlow.

The event allowed further education students from Carlow, Wicklow, Wexford, Laois, and Dublin to learn more about transitioning from further to higher education through SETU’s Progression Scheme.

Increasing access from further to higher education

SETU’s Progression Scheme ensures equal opportunities for learners moving from further to higher education. The Scheme recognises the scope of both general and discipline specific learnings acquired by successful students on further education programmes and matches these to the entry requirements of SETU programmes.

With their applications to SETU’s Progression Scheme already submitted, students attended the workshop to learn more about the University ahead of their future studies.

Enriching the learning environment

David Denieffe, Vice President for Student Experience at SETU, said, “Our Progression Pathway Workshop aims to make the transition to third level education easier for students coming to SETU via alternative pathways, outside of the traditional CAO system. SETU has a longstanding tradition of partnership and collaboration with the region's further education and training boards to ensure that the vital connection between Ireland's further and higher education institutions remains strong. I am delighted that we can continue to facilitate students through the Progression Pathway, as we know first-hand how deeply enriching they are to the learning environment at our university."

Demonstrating the support and facilities available

Throughout the day, a series of information talks were held on the topics of grant and financial support, library facilities and services, and overall student support and wellbeing. These talks provided attendees with an overview of the different support systems available to them upon continuing their educational journey with SETU.

Exploring a range of study opportunities

Several discipline-specific workshops were held to provide participants with the chance to meet academic staff, explore specific programme options and gain an understanding of the academic expectations at SETU.

Participants asked questions on course material and job opportunities, took a guided tour of the top-class facilities present at SETU’s campus in Carlow and discovered more about the specific programmes and disciplines they could progress into.

Representatives from SETU’s campuses in Carlow, Waterford and Wexford led each of the breakout sessions in the areas of Applied Science, Built Environment, Business, Computing, Health and Sport Science, Engineering and Communications, Humanities, Sport, Media, and Marketing.
