For David Wallace from county Wexford, the decision to study SETU’s Postgraduate Diploma in Science in Sustainable Agri-Food Systems, and to eventually progress to the Masters in Sustainable Agri-Food Systems, was driven by a lifelong passion for sustainable food production.

Having now completed his master’s degree, David reflects on his journey which has strengthened his expertise in the agri-food sector. David applied for the course through the Springboard+ initiative. As someone working full-time, David noted that the part-time format suited him best.

He said, “I have always had a strong interest in producing food sustainably, as well as for health and nutrition. This course gave me the chance to gain specific skills in understanding supply chains and policy-making strategies in agri-food systems, locally and worldwide.”

Learning from experts and industry leaders

Some of the most enjoyable aspects of the course for David came from the diverse range of modules, including Food, Health and Nutrition, Sustainable and Resilient Agri-Food Supply Chains, Global Agri-food Systems, and Project Management.

“The lecturers were knowledgeable, approachable, and clearly invested in the design of the course. Guest speakers from industry offered real-world insights, and visits to food production facilities helped us connect theory to practice. Seeing the production process up close really helped me identify the type of roles I’d like to pursue in the future.”

Challenging, but rewarding

While balancing his studies with full-time work, David admitted the degree could be demanding. However, he noted that the relevance of the material and the support from lecturers kept motivation high amongst him and his fellow students.

“It’s given me huge confidence in knowing what direction I want to take and how to apply for roles in the industry that interests me. The skills I’ve developed while studying at SETU will be directly applicable to my career going forward.”

Thriving as an SETU student

As a former SETU student returning to study, David found the university environment welcoming.

“My overall experience as an SETU student has been fantastic. The campus environment is vibrant, and I've always felt well-supported by SETU’s services.”

The level of understanding from lecturers and the flexibility of the course were especially valued by David.

“Sometimes life takes over, but the course allowed us to catch up and progress at our own pace,” he added.

A future in food systems

Beyond his studies, David hopes to secure a position that allows him to put his knowledge into practice, particularly a role that combines innovation, professional development, and environmental protection.

“It’s exciting to know I now meet the criteria for these roles and can start a new chapter in my career.”
