A passion for software development and artificial intelligence has led SETU master's graduate Izabela Zelek to begin a role as a junior software engineer at leading game development company Black Shamrock in Dublin.

Izabela joined Black Shamrock following the completion of Master of Science in Applied Artificial Intelligence at SETU, marking the next stage in her transition from postgraduate study into industry.

From undergraduate to postgraduate studies

Izabela previously completed a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Game Development at SETU, developing strong programming and problem-solving skills. During her studies, she also completed a work placement at Unum, a global employee benefits and insurance provider, gaining valuable experience in a professional software environment. Her undergraduate studies inspired her to further specialise in artificial intelligence through postgraduate study.

“I wanted to build on my background in software and game development and develop specialist knowledge in AI and machine learning, with a particular focus on its applications in education and gaming.”

A supportive and collaborative learning experience

One of her favourite aspects of college life was collaborating on projects, engaging in hands-on learning, and building connections across disciplines.

"My experience at SETU was very positive. The lecturers were supportive, and I appreciated the balance of theory and practical work, as well as the freedom to focus projects on areas that matched my interests."

Exploring and applying artificial intelligence

Throughout the master’s programme, Izabela developed knowledge in machine learning, Natural Language Processing (NLP), computer vision, and data analytics. The flexibility of the course allowed her to explore different areas of interest while building practical, hands-on skills.

For her master's dissertation, she explored the use of NLP to support Latin language learning through a gamified educational video game. The project combined AI, education, and game development.

Izabela’s work was later published and presented at the 33rd Irish Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science (AICS 2025) in Dublin, marking a significant academic achievement and recognition of her research contribution.

With a strong foundation in game development and artificial intelligence, Izabela is now embarking on the next stage of her career, eager to develop innovative software solutions and contribute to the evolving field of intelligent interactive technologies.
