SETU hosted Dr Daniel Engebretson, Vice President for Research at the University of South Dakota (USD), at its campus in Carlow.
The visit was a significant step toward establishing a research and innovation partnership between the two universities, with particular focus on biomedical electronics.
Dr Engebretson was hosted at SETU by Dónal McAlister, SETU’s International Affairs Manager, and Dr Diarmuid Ó’Briain, Head of Department of Electronic Engineering and Communications. It was a valuable opportunity to tour SETU’s facilities and delve into potential collaborative projects.
SETU’s biomedical electronics programme and its engagement with Irish innovation initiatives, such as those from Enterprise Ireland and Taighde Éireann, align with USD’s strong focus on biomedical engineering and it’s experience with programmes such as the US National Science Foundation Innovation Corps (I-Corps).

SETU and USD has a shared commitment to fostering international academic ties and leveraging the complementary strengths of both institutions to develop a partnership that holds great promise for students. Dr Engebretson’s visit marked a continuation of discussions about potential study abroad and exchange opportunities biomedical engineering students.
Through their combined resources and expertise, SETU and USD aims to open new pathways for students and researchers alike through facilitating joint research projects, student and faculty exchanges, and a rich exchange of knowledge and best practices.
The collaboration is poised to create a dynamic environment for innovation, directly benefiting students and contributing to advancements in the biomedical field. This is a powerful example of how international partnerships can bridge geographical distances to create meaningful and impactful academic connections.
