Graduate of the BSc (Hons) in Molecular Biology with Biopharmaceutical Science, Aziel Zafar, made the most of his time at SETU. Aziel got involved in the Students Union, Peer-to-Peer mentoring, clubs and societies and EU-CONEXUS. Aziel is now studying MSc in Neuroscience at Trinity College Dublin.
Move to Ireland
Aziel grew up in Pakistan, where he completed his GCSEs and A Level exams at schools that focused on natural sciences. In 2021, Aziel applied to SETU to begin his studies abroad, which coincided with his family’s move to Ireland.
“I have always been interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying disease development. I was also eager to develop practical molecular biology skills used in research, which made this course the ideal choice for me,” Aziel discussed.
Practical nature
Aziel enjoyed the practicality of the programme: “The most useful learnings from my undergraduate studies were the molecular biology skills I gained, including polymerase chain reaction (PCR), western blotting, and ELISA, which are essential in any wet-lab based discipline. Learning and refining these techniques gave me a strong foundation, allowing me to excel in laboratory-based modules.”
Recalling his proudest moment, Aziel said: “My proudest moment in my undergraduate was when I received the Eurofins Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Biology Research.”
Extracurricular activities
Aziel made the most of his time as an SETU student, inside and outside of the classroom: “I was involved in extracurricular activities, which allowed me to network with students from other disciplines. I worked with SETU Students’ Union for two years, as the Science and Computing School Officer and later as a Campus Officer. I volunteered as a Peer-to-Peer Mentor, progressing to Senior Mentor in my third year. I also served as the Treasurer of the Christian Union for two years. Additionally, I was proud to win the STEM Growth Hub Entrepreneurship Competition. I also enjoyed organising the Science and Computing Ball and performing with my band at the Chinese New Year event this year.”
Learning with EU-CONEXUS
Aziel’s expanded his learning with EU-CONEXUS: “As part of my study abroad programme, I participated in EU-CONEXUS. Many of my modules were outside my core degree subjects, including entrepreneurship, renewable energy, and environmental psychology. Despite not being directly related to my field, these courses were highly engaging and complemented aspects of my studies. For instance, the entrepreneurship module deepened my understanding of the business side of drug development and marketing within the pharmaceutical industry.”
Advice
Offering his advice for prospective students, Aziel recommended: “Create a five-year plan at the start of your degree and set clear, achievable goals to help you stay on track. Networking is also an essential skill to develop, so be proactive in building connections from the early stages of your studies.”
What is next for Aziel?
On his future plans, Aziel said, “I am deeply interested in pursuing a career in research focused on neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease. The MSc Neuroscience course at TCD will serve as a vital stepping stone to develop the skills and knowledge necessary for advanced research - to prepare me for a PhD programme. Ultimately, I aspire to combine research and teaching, contributing to both scientific discovery and the education of future neuroscientists.
