Adam Nolan thrives at SETU, balancing academics and athletics with the support of his Sport Scholarship and the university’s welcoming community.

Shaped by a community

For Adam, he feels that the people around SETU moulded him into the person he is today, both academically and socially. "It is a welcoming and encouraging environment where growth and creativity are supported every step of the way. The lecturers are approachable and want to see students do well. I think that makes great sense of community on campus. As a Carlow native I thought it was important to stay local and further my education here at SETU, which helped me build strong friendships, gain confidence, and had the space to figure out what I’m passionate about, all while creating long lasting memories" Adam says.

Balance

During Adams time at SETU, the sport scholarship significantly supported his academics and sport. "Having access to physio, nutrition advice, and strength and conditioning support has made a big difference. It means I can train and compete at a high level without it affecting my studies too much. It takes a lot of pressure off and helps me stay on track both physically and academically".

The scholarship has been a huge help in balancing both college and sport. Having access to physio, nutrition advice, and strength and conditioning support has made a big difference.

Importance of clubs and societies

Speaking about his involvement in the Athletics club, Adam says, "Being part of the athletics club at SETU has played a massive role in my college journey. It opened new doors for me and gave me the chance to meet and work with people I probably wouldn’t have crossed paths with otherwise. It’s been a great way to take a break from college work, stay active and healthy, and just enjoy being part of something and watching it grow through the years. I’ve made solid friendships through it, and it’s definitely made my time here a lot more fun and memorable!".

Memorable moments

Adam always had an interest and taken part in athletics from a young age, so it was natural for him to join the athletics club when he became a student at SETU. "My most found memory was being awarded Sports Person of the Year at the 2025 Student Recognition Awards. I managed to defend both my Varsity titles this year which helped me win the award but it also makes me proud to see that a majority club and sport like athletics is involved in such an achievement".
