This certificate is aimed at providing participants an understanding of the multi-faceted nature of Sustainable Forest Management. Participants will gain the knowledge and skills required in forest operation management and particularly how forest operations are carried out within the Irish forest regulatory framework.

Unique Features

Ten to twelve in-person scheduled fieldtrips to forest sites in the south east of Ireland are an important element of the teaching, learning and assessment strategy. Fieldtrips will be full days outdoors and participants will be expected to engage fully in all fieldtrips.

The Certificate in Forest Operations is made up of four 5-credit modules: 

  1. Forest Establishment
  2. Forest Harvesting 
  3. Fundamentals of Forestry 
  4. Forest Engineering
  • Graduates with a minimum Level 6 qualification in Forestry, such as the QQI Advanced Certificate in Forestry.
  • Graduates with a minimum Level 6 qualification in another discipline and a minimum of two years employment in the forestry sector.
  • Graduates with a minimum Level 7 qualification in another discipline.
  • Applicants with evidence of sufficient formal education and/or experiential prior learning may apply through the Recognition of Prior Learning process to gain entry.

Successful graduates may apply for entry onto SE505 BSc in Forestry or SE527 Level 8 BSc in Forestry and gain module exemptions.

Designed to enable non-forestry professionals employed or seeking employment in the Irish forestry sector to understand, operate and communicate within specialist forestry teams.
