The alliance offers opportunities for students, educators, and researchers to study, teach, and engage in cutting-edge research at the European level providing services, activities, and innovative solutions that contribute to sustainable coastal development.
Sustainable Marine Research examines marine resources, with the aim of increasing the value and sustainability of these resources. Research areas include: Novel marine microorganisms and bioactives, High value-added applications of marine waste, Metal bioremediation and Environmental biomonitoring.
SETU's Department of Applied Science has been awarded €1.37million in funding for a groundbreaking international research project in tackling plastic pollution converting waste materials into high-value bioplastic precursors and polymers - supporting a transition to a circular bioeconomy.
- The ERDF Ireland-Wales funded project STREAM (Sensor Technologies for Remote Aquatic Environmental Monitoring), lead by SETU, monitors Coastal and Estuarine environment around both Ireland and Wales, gathering valuable data to monitor, adapt to and mitigate the most serious impacts of climate change. As part of the project, researchers from SETU are working with shellfish farmers along the south coast of Ireland to help them adapt and respond to climate change using cutting-edge technologies.
