SETU’s third-year Tourism and Event Management students gathered for a proud milestone as they received their Regional Tourist Guide Badges for the south-east region.
This certification marks a significant accomplishment for the Bachelor of Science (Honours) Tourism and Event Management students, as SETU remains the first university offering tour guide training dedicated to the southeast of Ireland.
Guidance and recognition from industry leaders
The celebration opened with warm remarks from Dr Janette Davies, Deputy Head at SETU, highlighted the importance of industry-relevant skills in shaping future tourism professionals. The awards were then presented by Billy Byrne, Tourism Development Officer at Wexford County Council, underscored the growing demand for trained guides across Ireland’s ancient east.
Practice with purpose
Students completed an intensive two-year training pathway embedded within their Tourism and Event Management degree, designed to develop both knowledge and practical expertise. Their coursework covered Ireland’s cultural and natural heritage, supported by a year-long module dedicated to professional tour-guiding skills.
The training was further enriched through multiple familiarisation trips across Wexford, Waterford, Carlow, Kilkenny, and Wicklow, allowing students to explore both well-known attractions and lesser-visited sites. These experiences strengthened students with a strong regional understanding and the ability to deliver engaging, informative visitor experiences.
Ireland’s tourism lift
Fáilte Ireland recognised tour guides, these students are ready to take an active part in Ireland’s tourism industry. Their skills are definitely in demand in Ireland’s ancient east where appropriately trained guides are one of the skill sets needed to further develop a sustainable tourism industry.

The training equips students with strong communication and people-management skills, providing a foundation for careers in the broader Tourism and Event Management industries, regardless of the path they choose.
