What is the Higher Diploma in Business in Management?

The Higher Diploma in Business in Management is a one-year, 60 credit conversion programme which is aimed at developing the range of cross-enterprise skills required of modern competitive organisations. It has been designed with business management skills as a dominant focus. With a strong industry focus,  the programme encompasses workshops, seminars, online learning and the traditional classroom environment where participants develop key business and management skills over three semesters.

The programme is flexibly-delivered utilising a block-release mode (2 days per month) and blended approach for delivery. In Semester 1 and 2, the student takes a number of mandatory modules and also chooses one module from a list of electives. The participant will undertake an applied project as part of the credit provision in Semester 1 & 2.

The programme is ideal for anyone without a business qualification as it incorporates modules like Strategy, Leadership, Project Management, Operations and Supply Chain Management, and Innovation, this programme provides a bedrock for anyone hoping to pursue careers in team leadership, operations management or supervision in a wide variety of contexts.

Special Feature

The course is unique in that it highlights the importance of process in achieving personal and organisational objectives. On completing the course, students will have both the personal skills and specialist knowledge to undertake challenging assignments and integrate more effectively into the workplace.  At the same time, the programme incorporates a strong practical component both in supporting the delivery of course material and in the design and development of industry based solutions. Students will develop the capacity to master independent research, analysis and resolution of management issues.

The cross-context nature of the programme will compel students to share views and opinions from different perspectives. Students will be required to work together on the range of business subjects and in developing professional practice thereby enabling them to understand each other’s perspectives and contribute more effectively in real organisational contexts.

Delivery

This programme will be delivered through a blend of lectures, tutorial sessions, as well as independent study. Students will be required to attend SETU Cork Road campus in Waterford for two days per month Friday and Saturday. Student Testimonials

“Overall, I am so glad I completed this course. Thanks to it, I got the job I always dreamed of. Before the course I was working as a floor manager. After five years I was made redundant and was unemployed for six months. During the course I got a job as a weekend manager. I applied for a job a couple of weeks ago for a position as store manager and this morning I got it. I know that the course gave me the tools to be a professional manager and for that I would like to thank all of my mentors and the staff involved”.

-Katarzyna KowalCzyk - Retail Manager, Carlow.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of completing the course I did, a Higher Diploma in Business (Management), and cannot recommend it highly enough. There are excellent supports in place such as study courses and guides, academic writing lessons, teamwork lessons. The course is very achievable for people with relevant life and work experience who are willing to work hard. Yes, the hours can be long, however it is only for a few months and the outcome is well worth it”.

-Caroline Summers - Senior Manager, Harvey Norman Ireland, Kilkenny (published in the HEA Changing Voices Changing Ireland).
