SETU is committed to providing high-quality, evidence-informed training and development opportunities for researchers and Research Managers/Administrators (RMAs) across all career stages. Our provision aligns with the European Charter & Code, the Vitae Researcher Development Framework and the European Competence Framework for Researchers (ResearchCompp) and RMA Comp.

Our Approach

SETU’s development framework supports researchers to build the skills, knowledge and competencies required for successful and sustainable careers. Core principles include responsible research practice, open science, equality and inclusion, leadership development and support for career progression at all stages (R1–R4), including RMA’s.

Development Opportunities

SETU offers a coordinated suite of programmes, including:

  • Broaden Your Horizons researcher development programme,
  • Research integrity, ethics and open research training,
  • Leadership, supervision and mentoring supports,
  • Communities of practice, including networks for RMAs, supervisors, postdoctoral and early-career researchers,
  • Career development workshops and structured guidance,
  • Research Week - an annual week-long programme of workshops, seminars and networking events supporting researcher development and cross-campus engagement.

Enhancement Priorities (2026–2029)

Planned developments include expanded training pathways, improved access to digital learning resources, strengthened supervision and leadership training, and systematic monitoring of training participation and impact. These initiatives support SETU’s commitment to fostering a capable, confident and well-supported research community.
