South East Technological University’s (SETU) Autumn Schools Open Day at the Cork Road Campus in Waterford gave thousands of senior cycle students their first real taste of university life.
Chance to explore
The event, held for school groups from Waterford, the south east and beyond, offered visitors the chance to explore the wide range of programmes and facilities available at SETU.
Aimed at students considering undergraduate study in September 2026, the Open Day also welcomed individuals, parents, and guardians.
Throughout the day, attendees learned about over 140 CAO courses offered by SETU across disciplines including business, engineering and architecture, sports and nursing, law, social sciences, arts and psychology, the creative and performing arts, languages, tourism and hospitality, science, and computing. SETU’s new courses in MVB in Veterinary Medicine and Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) were of particular interest to a large cohort.
The event featured presentations on all CAO courses, along with opportunities to meet lecturers and current students to gain insights into course content, career options, and campus life.
Right choice
Dr Derek O’Byrne, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Teaching & Learning at SETU, said the event was about helping students make informed, confident decisions about their future.
“Our goal is to help students discover the path that suits their interests and strengths. Open days like this are valuable both in terms of the information students gain and the connections they create,” Dr O’Byrne said. “We want students to picture themselves in an environment where they could thrive academically, socially, and personally over the next four years. When students find the right environment and the right programme, everything else falls into place.”
Jess Lawton, Deputy Manager in School, CAO and Career Guidance Engagement at SETU, said the event provided an opportunity for students to explore their options.
“We know that choosing the right course can feel overwhelming, but we’re here to make that journey easier. The Autumn Schools Open Day gave students a chance to ask questions, meet lecturers and current students, and explore every possibility open to them,” she said. “We want students to feel excited about their next steps, and SETU can help them on their educational journey.”
