A third year South East Technological University (SETU) Bachelor of Laws student was recently presented with the inaugural ‘Nolan Farrell & Goff award for Legal Research and Critical Assessment’.
Legal research and strategic thinking is the foundation of our daily work and this year’s topic is both currently relevant and an issue which will no doubt recur in the years ahead. We are delighted to reward Dylan for his insightful and interesting essay.

Winner
Grainne Callanan, Programme Leader of the Bachelor of Laws at SETU in Waterford, was delighted to announce Dylan Jacob as the winner of this award.
“Dylan is a very deserving recipient of this award. He was required to critically assess whether there is a lack of clarity in Irish Law when assessing a person's use of lethal force defensively in both fatal and non-fatal offences. His essay was well researched, well written and demonstrated excellent critical engagement with the subject matter,” said Grainne.
Valerie Farrell, Partner at Nolan Farrell & Goff LLP was delighted to attend and present the award, “As we are celebrating 50 years in practice this year, we wanted to strengthen our relationship with our local university. We decided the best way would be to create an award to reward a fundamental skill set within the legal profession.

He noted, “As Nolan Farrell & Goff LLP celebrate 50 years in 2025, we would like to congratulate them on this achievement. I would also like to thank them for their contribution to the Department, our student body and our graduates for the past 25 years as well as presenting Dylan —a very deserving recipient—with this award. Between bursaries and student placements in the past and this inaugural award in Legal Research, it has been a substantial commitment, and we hope that this relationship continues into the future.”
