Former Canadian ice hockey player Nicolas Redmond discovered a new passion in Ireland, trading the rink for hurling and making his mark in Gaelic games.
Former professional ice hockey player, Nicolas Redmond, graduated from SETU’s Bachelor of Arts in Sport Coaching and Business Management (GAA). Originally from Canada, Nicolas swapped his hockey stick for a hurley to gain in-depth knowledge of Ireland’s national sport.
“I chose the course because SETU was the only place in the world that offered such an in-depth and detailed opportunity to learn about GAA, alongside developing skills in coaching and business management. That combination was hugely intriguing to me.”

From early mornings on the pitch to lectures in business management, Nicolas’ experience has been one of growth, discovery, and community. During his time at SETU, Nicolas also completed the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Management Practice from the Department of Sport, Media, and Marketing in Carlow.
Gaining exposure across the field of sport
Nicolas found SETU’s approach to experiential learning refreshing. The blend of on-field training, gym sessions, and classroom-based management studies provided the perfect balance.
“I really enjoyed the player development sessions on the pitch and in the gym. I also enjoyed the lectures about personal growth and human development. While business and management modules gave me a wider perspective of how sport operates beyond the pitch,” said Nicolas.
The range of modules on the course, from performance analysis and strength and conditioning to skill acquisition and management, helped Nicolas to discover his passions. “The course at SETU allowed me to see what truly inspires me. It was so valuable to discover what aspects of sport I enjoy the most. This will help me to determine the career path I want to take,” Nicolas added.
A community that feels like home
As an international student, Nicolas found the community spirit at SETU to be one of the most rewarding aspects of his experience. “From the lecturers to the campus feel, it doesn’t take long to get to know everyone. The lecturers really cared and helped us balance academics with sport,” he said.
His involvement with the SETU GAA Club became a highlight of his college life. “I owe a lot to my teammates, coaches, and sports staff for making my experience so special and welcoming me into the GAA family and culture,” Nicolas shared.
Looking Ahead
Nicolas looks forward to the range of career possibilities in sport.
“I would like to play my part in delivering sport to the masses; whether that’s managing a sports facility or club, coaching future athletes, or creating opportunities for participation. No matter where I go, I know the skills and experiences I have gained at SETU will help me to make a positive impact.”
