Dr Chloe Leddy’s journey to PhD success at South East Technological University (SETU) reflects a deep passion for sport, innovation, and discovery.
After graduating with a Bachelors in Sport Science and Health from Dublin City University in 2015, Chloe became fascinated by sports biomechanics. Her final-year project examined how simulated training environments could be used to measure movement performance in vertical jumps using inertial measuring units (IMUs) and machine learning.
Building experience in sport and business
Following her degree, Chloe worked in the health and fitness industry as a sport centre specialist, developing strength and conditioning programmes in a university setting. She later completed a Bachelor of Business degree in 2019 before returning to the field she loved most, sports biomechanics.
Returning to research at SETU
That return came in 2021, when Chloe began her PhD at South East Technological University (SETU) titled The Application of Artificial Intelligence and Biomechanical Analysis to Create a Movement Analysis Protocol for Hurling Sport Motion.
“I chose to do a PhD because it was an amazing opportunity to contribute to research on the biomechanics of hurling,” she says. “The integration of artificial intelligence brings a new and forward-thinking approach to analysing movement in dynamic, fast-paced sports.”

Skills for research and beyond
Throughout her PhD, Chloe developed a wide range of transferable skills, from problem-solving and project management to data analysis and communication. She credits conferences, collaboration, and SETU’s supportive research community with helping her grow as an independent researcher.
“Attending conferences and engaging with industry experts has been invaluable,” she says. “The staff at SETU are always encouraging and provide excellent opportunities to learn new skills and share research with peers and the wider community.”
Guidance and recognition
Chloe’s supervisor, Dr Lilibeth Zambrano, commended her commitment and professionalism throughout her research journey.
“I am delighted by Chloe's successful completion of her PhD, and it was a privilege to serve as her supervisor,” said Dr Zambrano. “Over the past four years, we developed an excellent professional relationship built on strong communication. Chloe demonstrated efficient time management and consistently approached suggestions with an open mind. She proved herself to be an independent researcher with a strong capacity for critical thinking and handled every challenge with remarkable effectiveness. Her performance was outstanding, and I am confident she has a very bright future ahead, whether she pursues a career in research or industry.”
Innovation through collaboration
Chloe’s interdisciplinary research also brought her into the field of engineering, where she quickly developed analytical skills in computer programming and mathematics.
“It was challenging,” she explains, “but seeing my research progress towards meaningful, real-world applications has been highly rewarding.”
That work was recognised internationally in November 2024, when Chloe presented her paper Evaluating Sensor Placement and Feature Importance for Hurling Movement Classification at the International Conference on Sport Science Research and Technology Support in Portugal, winning the Best Student Paper Award.

Looking to the future
“The opportunity to contribute to impactful research in the evolving fields of sport biomechanics and engineering is incredibly exciting,” she says. “I’m passionate about continuing to push the boundaries of what’s possible through innovation and collaboration.”
