From Dunboyne, Co. Meath, Jack Brown is currently studying SETU's BA (Hons) in Culinary Arts programme. Jack had the opportunity to study abroad at Humber Polytechnic, Toronto in Canada for a semester as part of the Erasmus programme.
For Jack, the opportunity to work and study abroad is what helped him decide to study the BA (Hons) in Culinary Arts at SETU. “I attended the open day, and realised SETU suited me well. I liked the range of modules on offer, but most importantly the opportunity to work and study abroad,” Jack said.
New experiences
Developing skills as a chef, while also getting to try new experiences has been Jack’s highlight of studying at SETU. “Performing a demo at Sustainability in the Arts Festival, getting to visit different bakeries, kitchens and meeting skilled chefs has helped me massively,” he added.
Support
Jack commented on the support he received from staff at SETU: “My passion for cooking and my course in general would've been lost a long time ago, if it wasn't for my lecturers pushing me to stay focused and reach my full potential. SETU lecturers are super at helping students and noticing where some students may require extra help.”
Studying in Toronto
As part of the Culinary Arts programme Jack studied abroad in Humber Polytechnic, Canada. “From the day I heard about the opportunity to study abroad, I was set on going to Toronto, Canada. When I got accepted and everything fell into place, it didn't feel real,” Jack explained.
Life in the city
“I got the chance to experience how a different college, in a different country teaches their programme, learning things I may not have learned elsewhere. I also got to explore one of the most famous cities in the world, watching big sports teams, visiting famous landmarks like Niagara Falls, all while still going to college."
Jack continued: “It was an opportunity I would love to do all over again and I am forever grateful for getting the chance to study abroad.”
Jack’s advice
Jack discussed his advice for CAO applicants considering choosing this course: “Properly research the course so you know what modules are involved, visit the college if you can and contact the college about any prior questions. It never hurts to be prepared.”
