ENGAGED: Co-Creating Ireland’s Public Involvement in Open Research Roadmap

What is the ENGAGED programme?

Over the course of 2025, ENGAGED, a partnership project between Trinity College Dublin and Dublin City University, built a network of co-creators with the knowledge, insights and capacity to co-create and implement an evidence-informed Public Involvement in Open Research Roadmap, with agreed actions, timelines and key performance indicators.

Throughout the year, ENGAGED ran 10 Collective Intelligence Workshops with contributions from more than 90 co-creators. The workshops were held in person and online, using a wide range of creative data collection methods. The ENGAGED co-creators came from academia, community and voluntary groups, NGOs, public and civil servants, businesses as well as activists, advocates and citizen scientists.

ENGAGED launches the roadmap in early March. The roadmap is built around five clear destination themes or a more Engaged Research Ecosystem.

The roadmap destinations include:

1. Research that Reaches Everyone: Accessible outputs and open data.

2. Fair Partnership: Communities as Equal Partners.

3. Knowledge as Exchange: A research environment that values mutual learning.

4. Systems That Work and that People Want to Use: Supportive systems and infrastructures.

5. Communities Shaping Research Priorities: Civil society shaping agendas, not just responding to them.

Details of SETU event

The ENGAGED Team will be visiting SETU to discuss the ENGAGED Open Research Roadmap within the context of SETU’s research environment. The ENGAGED team has designed a workshop that reflects the enablers and barriers to engaged research identified by SETU researchers during the opening session of the Engaged Research Forum. 

The session will centre on these insights, focusing on the challenges, supports, and approaches that shape how SETU researchers engage the public in research.

The ENGAGED team will be available after the event to meet and discuss your own research and how you might apply the roadmap to your engaged and open work, or to answer any queries you may have.

Teas, coffees and refreshments will be available from 9:00am and lunch will be available from 12:30pm.

Funding is available to cover travel from Carlow and Wexford Campuses, to attend the event.

ENGAGED is a partnership project between Trinity College Dublin and Dublin City University. It received funding from Ireland’s National Open Research Forum (NORF) under the 2023 Open Research Fund. NORF is funded by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) on behalf of the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research Innovation and Science (DFHERIS).
