The Certificate in Introduction to CAD and 3D Modelling is an NFQ Level 6 Special Purpose Award designed to provide learners with a foundation in computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D modelling for engineering and manufacturing applications.

The programme introduces the principles of technical drawing and digital design, enabling learners to develop the skills required to create, modify and present engineering drawings and three-dimensional models. Through practical, hands-on learning, participants gain experience using industry-standard CAD software and develop a portfolio of design work.

The programme is suitable for those beginning a career in engineering or design, as well as professionals seeking to develop or enhance their CAD and technical drawing skills.

This programme develops the practical skills required to produce accurate engineering drawings and 3D models using CAD software.

You will learn how to create and edit 2D technical drawings, apply industry drawing standards, and use precision drafting techniques to communicate engineering information effectively. The programme also introduces 3D modelling, enabling learners to transform concepts and technical drawings into three-dimensional representations.

Throughout the course, you will develop an understanding of engineering drawing conventions, including dimensions, tolerances, machining symbols and technical documentation. Practical projects and exercises provide opportunities to apply these skills while building confidence in the use of CAD tools and design workflows.

By the end of the programme, you will be able to create professional-quality engineering drawings, develop 3D models and present design solutions in accordance with industry standards.

Previous knowledge, though advantageous, is not necessary. It is assumed that candidates will be familiar with elementary drawing terms and conventions, as well as very simple geometrical constructions. All applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Lifelong Learning reserves the right to require applicants to attend for an interview to determine their suitability for the programme

The programme provides a foundation for employment and further study in engineering, design, manufacturing and related technical disciplines.

The skills developed are relevant to a range of roles involving engineering design, technical drawing, manufacturing support and product development. The programme is also suitable for professionals seeking to upskill in CAD and 3D modelling as part of their current role.

Successful completion may support progression to further study in engineering, manufacturing, product design and other related disciplines.
