The Higher Certificate in Arts in Adult and Further Education is a 120 credit, NFQ Level 6 award aimed at current adult and further education and training tutors or practitioners and those wishing to pursue a career teaching or tutoring in adult basic education, further education and training (FET) and community education contexts.  The programme explores theories and good practice in adult basic education and adult education and will equip participants with the knowledge, skills and competencies required to work/act as tutors, facilitators and trainers in adult basic education, FET and/or community education settings.  It is a part-time blended learning programme, with a delivery model that facilitates the working practitioner, scheduled on weekend teaching blocs.  Classes are delivered in workshop-style, where collective, collaborative and creative lerning is strongly encouraged.  Participants can apply their learning directly to their practice and share their experiences with peers and lecturers in a supportive learning environment.

The programme aims to:

  • Provide current and future adult and further education and training tutors/practitioners with the requisite skillset required for their roles;
  • Offer participants a theoretical framework in adult and further education to underpin and enhance their professional practice;
  • Enable participants to explore areas for development and to enhance the quality of their teaching and work with adult learners.


Delivery

The Higher Certificate in Arts in Adult & Further Education is a part-time blended learning modular programme with a flexible delivery model that facilitates the working practitioner.  Traditionally, the programme is delivered through a combination of face-to-face and blended learning. Classes are delivered in weekend blocs (Friday and Saturday) on campus in SETU Waterford (on average 1 or 2 per month) and use of the SETU Waterford virtual learning environment (Moodle) in order to facilitate adult learners.

Delivery

This modular programme is delivered through a combination of face-to-face and blended learning. Classes are delivered in weekend blocs (Friday and Saturday) on campus in SETU Waterford (on average one or two per month).

The programme comprises the following 10 credit modules. Classes are delivered workshop style, where collective, collaborative and creative learning is strongly encouraged.

Please note: Participants must complete all 10 mandatory modules and may choose two elective modules (20 credits).  Elective modules will be offered subject to viability.

  • Ideally applicants should be actively involved in the Adult and Further Education and Training Sector. 
  • Applicants may be invited to attend an interview for entry to the programme.

Non-Standard Applicants/Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Applicants with significant professional experience in the Further Education and Training (FET) sectory may apply for advanced entry or exemptions using the RPL Policy. Fees
€320 per 10 credit module.
€210 per module - this subsidised rate is available for those working in the adult literacy service

Participants who successfully complete the Higher Certificate in Arts in Adult and Further Education may progress to undertake the NFQ Level 7 Bachelor of Arts in Adult & Further Education, which will enhance their professional competence and capabilities as adult education tutors/practitioners.  Please consult our Programme Pathways Infographic below to give you an idea of the pathways/progression opportunities available to you for further study.

 

 

Participants who successfully complete the Higher Certificate in Arts in Adult and Further Education may progress to an ordinary degree programme at NFQ 7, the Bachelor of Arts in Adult Education. 

 

Completion of a level 8 programme will also enable students to undertake taught Masters programmes or Masters degrees by research at SETU Waterford or other third-level colleges
