The Certificate in Spirituality in Education aims to provide students with opportunities to explore the discourse around spirituality in Education and how it applies to practice. It will allow them to develop their approach to teaching and learning/professional practice, with the goal of fostering higher levels of awareness, critical reflection and enhanced teaching/professional presence. 

The module provides space for students to explore how spirituality can be applied across disciplines and educational contexts in order to complement more traditional classroom and professional activities, and transform ways of thinking about Education. It is applicable to practitioners in all education sectors and has the potential to be deeply transformative. It may be particularly empowering to those who teach sensitive subjects, or deal with sensitive issues.

Delivery

This course will be delivered in a blended format, combining both online and in-person learning.

Spirituality in Education

This module aims to provide students with opportunities to explore the discourse around spirituality in Education and how it applies to practice. Applicants are required to have an Honours Degree (Level 8) or equivalent and be working within an educational setting. 

Spirituality in Education is an elective module on the Master of Education. On successful completion of this Minor Award, graduates may choose to complete the Master of Education (MEd) at SETU Waterford

Upon successful completion of this module, a student will be able to: 

• Critically assess the literature in the field of Spirituality Studies and Contemplative Pedagogy and demonstrate a systematic understanding of established, current and emerging knowledge in the field. 

• Explore and engage in a range of applied spirituality and contemplative pedagogy practices in order to develop key skills in awareness, presence and attentiveness for the enhancement of professional practice in educational contexts. 

• Apply spirituality and contemplative practices to advance critical and social mindfulness in the classroom and develop empathy and solidarity among learners, as well as sensitivity to issues of sustainability. 

• Plan and facilitate educational activities and processes that create a positive educational/professional environment in which difficult and sensitive topics might be effectively addressed. 

• Critically self-evaluate in relation to spirituality in practice, and bring a reflective and creative approach to ongoing self-development in this regard
