ESD and Transformative Pedagogy
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is concerned not only with what students learn, but also how they learn and how learning can support more sustainable and just futures.
UNESCO describes ESD as empowering and motivating learners to become active sustainability citizens who are capable of critical thinking and participation in shaping a sustainable future (UNESCO, 2017).
Sustainability challenges such as climate change, inequality and biodiversity loss are often complex, interconnected and contested. These challenges are sometimes described as ‘wicked problems’ because they involve uncertainty, competing priorities and interdependent social, environmental and economic dimensions.
Addressing these challenges therefore requires more than the transmission of knowledge alone. Students need opportunities to critically engage with complexity, reflect on values and assumptions, collaborate with others and apply learning in meaningful and practical contexts. This is why ESD frequently draws on learner-centred, action-oriented and transformative pedagogical approaches.
These approaches can help students develop sustainability competencies such as systems thinking, collaboration, ethical reasoning, critical reflection and the ability to work with complexity and uncertainty.
Pedagogical Approaches:
Learner-Centred Approaches
Learner-centred pedagogy emphasises the active development of knowledge rather than passive learning or knowledge transmission alone. Students are encouraged to engage critically with ideas, reflect on their own experiences and assumptions, and participate actively in learning processes.
Within ESD, educators often act as facilitators of learning, supporting students to question assumptions, explore multiple perspectives and develop informed understandings of sustainability challenges.
Action-Oriented Learning
Action-oriented learning involves students engaging with real-world sustainability challenges and reflecting on these experiences in relation to learning, values and personal development.
This may involve projects, enquiry based activities, placements, community engagement or collaborative work connected to sustainability issues. Action-oriented learning can help students connect theory and practice, apply disciplinary knowledge and develop confidence in responding to complex sustainability challenges.
Transformative Learning
Transformative learning aims to support learners to critically reflect on and potentially change how they understand themselves, their discipline and the wider world.
In ESD, transformative learning may involve questioning dominant assumptions, engaging with ethical and social dimensions of sustainability, and exploring alternative perspectives and futures.
Rather than promoting particular viewpoints, transformative pedagogy seeks to create learning environments in which students can critically engage with complexity, uncertainty and contested issues, and develop the capacity for informed and reflective action.
UNESCO and Advance HE emphasise that transformative sustainability learning should engage cognitive, socio-emotional and behavioural dimensions of learning as described in the Head, Heart and Hands approach.
This means supporting students not only to develop knowledge and understanding (Head), but also to reflect on values and relationships (Heart), and apply learning through action and practice (Hands).
