The Wireless Communications & Large Scale Simulation research group focuses on various areas of wireless communications.

This research group was formed in 2002 with the aim of researching with microwave energy into material propagation and into the Radio Frequency (RF) air interface, with a particular emphasis here upon the measurement and simulation of the characteristics of the wireless communications’ channel for cellular, indoor and satellite wireless communications.

Research carried out includes applied research for innovation in smart antennas, modulation, coding and related embedded processing. Innovations in the electronic system-on-chip (SOC) area, combined Radio Frequency (RF) capability with the SOCs, are also being exploited. This permits extensive research in wireless sensing and control.

Research Facilities

The Wireless Communications & Large Scale Simulation research group operates within both the 11,000 square foot SETU Waterford Engineering Research Centre and the main SETU Waterford Cork Road campus. The group is well equipped for research into wireless technology fields, possessing the following instruments:

Tektronix RSA6100A Real-Time Spectrum Analyzer

 Agilent DSA91204A 12GHz -4Ch, Oscilloscope

Rhode & Schwarz ZVB20 4-port VNA 10M-20GHz

 Tektronix MSO2012Mixed Signal Oscilloscope

LabView controlled PXI racks

Agilent E8267D 20GHz vector signal generator

The WCLSSG are also in possession of a small Anechoic Chamber, which is situated within one of the group's research labs.
