The Certificate in Lifelong Learning and Adult Education aims to introduce students to the current national and international developments in the field of lifelong learning and adult education. The key national and EU policy perspectives will be explored and how these policy changes impact current and future considerations regarding access to education and learning throughout the lifespan. It will also focus on curriculum and programme design for lifelong learning including the use of micro-credentials and recognition of prior learning. Theoretical concepts such as andragogy, heutagogy, transformational learning and social and human capital development will be explored. Students will be encouraged to explore these concepts and theoretical underpinnings and apply them to their professional practice.

Lifelong Learning and Adult Education
This module aims to introduce students to the current national and international developments in the field of lifelong learning and adult education. The key national and EU policy perspectives will be explored and how these policy changes impact current and future considerations regarding access to education and learning throughout the lifespan. Applicants are required to have an Honours Degree (Level 8) or equivalent and be working within an educational setting.
The Certificate in Lifelong Learning and Adult Education is an elective module on the Master of Education. On successful completion of this Minor Award, graduates may choose to complete the Master of Education (MEd) at SETU Waterford.
Upon successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:
• Critique the different perspectives on the role and purpose of lifelong learning and adult education and the relationship between the learner and society.
• Differentiate between contexts within which lifelong learning takes place and its relationship with the economy and society with explicit reference to the development of social and human capital and the conflicts underpinning the different perspectives.
• Assess the individual, institutional and societal factors which may inhibit or encourage adult participation in education.
• Review, critique and explore the key learning theories underpinning lifelong learning and adult education and position your own perspectives within the theory.
• Analyse key policy developments and shifts at national and EU level and explore the implications for your practice.
