The Certificate in Health and Safety in Construction is a Level 9 programme designed for professionals working in construction, engineering, site management and health and safety roles who wish to develop specialist knowledge of construction safety management.
Delivered online on a part-time basis, the programme provides a comprehensive understanding of the legal, technical and practical aspects of health and safety within the construction sector. Learners examine the hazards, risks and regulatory requirements associated with construction activities and develop the knowledge required to support safer working environments and effective risk management practices.
The programme is particularly relevant for those responsible for health and safety compliance, risk assessment, site supervision and the implementation of safety systems within construction projects.
This programme explores the principles and practices of proactive health and safety management within construction environments.
You will examine Irish health and safety legislation, including the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act and Construction Regulations, while developing an understanding of the legal responsibilities of clients, contractors, project supervisors and other duty holders. The programme also considers the role of statutory appointments, safety documentation and regulatory compliance within construction projects.
A significant focus is placed on hazard identification and risk assessment. Learners explore common construction hazards including working at height, excavations, confined spaces, electricity, lifting operations, demolition activities, hazardous materials and plant movement. The programme examines practical approaches to identifying risks and implementing appropriate control measures to reduce the likelihood of accidents and incidents.
The programme also explores construction safety management systems, auditing, workplace inspections, safety communication and the development of effective safety practices. Learners gain an understanding of the role of the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) in inspection, enforcement and education, while also considering international approaches and best practice in construction health and safety management.
