Reflecting on Sustainability in Teaching and Learning

This interactive workshop introduces Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and explores how sustainability can be meaningfully embedded into teaching and learning through small, practical and discipline relevant enhancements.
Using a reflective and design thinking approach, participants will explore how sustainability connections may already exist within their modules, assessments or learning activities, even if they are not currently described in these terms. Through collaborative discussion and rapid redesign activities, participants will identify opportunities to connect teaching and learning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), real world sustainability challenges, graduate attributes and future professional contexts.
The workshop is intended as a supportive starting point for reflection and experimentation rather than curriculum redesign. Participants will be encouraged to identify one realistic enhancement or idea that could be explored further within their own teaching practice.
Workshop Objectives:
Participants will:
- explore the role of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and the SDGs within higher education
- identify sustainability connections relevant to their discipline, module or teaching context
- reflect on teaching, learning and assessment through a sustainability lens
- explore approaches such as systems thinking, collaboration and real world learning
- develop one practical and discipline relevant enhancement to explore further within their teaching practice
