Biography

Katie Scallan is a first-class honours graduate from Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) where she completed both the Bachelor of Business Degree and Masters of Business in Accounting. During her time in WIT she was awarded a Certificate of Academic Excellence (2011) and the Graduate Business Scholarship programme by the AIB Centre of Finance and Business Research (2013). Following graduation from WIT, Katie gained three years’ experience in practice with PriceWaterhouseCoopers where she qualified as a Chartered Accountant.  During her time in practice she gained experience in a variety of financial services for both public and private entities across many different industry sectors. Services provided include: statutory audits, group reporting engagement, non- audit services and FRS 102 transition services.

Katie has developed a number of skills during her academic and professional journey to date. Katie has demonstrated experience in managing teams. She has a passion for coaching and developing individuals whilst endeavouring to promote quality work when meeting deadlines.

Katie’s main research interests include corporate governance, board of directors and the not-for-profit sector. Katie is currently completing her PhD in Waterford Institute of Technology.

Teaching

Katie currently lecturers in the School of Business at Waterford Institute of Technology. Katie lecturers on a number of courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, delivering moodles including auditing, financial reporting, corporate interpretation and finance. 

Research

As part of the Masters of Business in Accounting, Katie completed a dissertation entitled “The Impact of Voluntary Auditor Rotation upon Corporate Valuation: An Empirical study of FTSE 350 Companies.” The study investigated the reaction of the capital markets to the announcement of auditor rotation. This research was performed under the supervision of Mr. John Casey.

Katie is a recipient of the WIT President’s PhD Scholarship and commenced her doctoral studies in January 2018. She is a member of the Building Information Modelling Collective Research Group and her research contributes to the Governance and Responsibility Theme of the Centre.  Katie’s research entitled “An ethnography of board meetings”. This research sets out to explore boardrooms and board meetings beyond our current distant and rationale account. This study aspires to capture the culture and spirit of these organisational processes.

Katie was recently awarded the Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship (2019) from the Irish Research Council and further supplementary funding from the Irish Accounting and Finance Association (2019). This funding demonstrates the importance of Katies research to both the Accounting and Corporate Governance discipline and the Not-for-Profit sector.

This research is being performed under the experienced supervision of Dr. Collette Kirwan, Dr. Ray Griffin and Dr. Richard Burke.
