Dr John Wall

As a lecturer / senior lecturer I have taught on construction, civil engineering, architecture and computing programmes from level 6 to level 9.  I have also been course leader on the development of two masters programmes within the institute including a collaborative masters delivered in 3 countries and a new blended learning masters in construction project management.  I have supervised both taught and research masters students.

2012 – Awarded a grant of €1,500 by NAIRTL to undertake and publish a desk based research project on Professional Development Frameworks.

2011 – Awarded a grant for Innovation in Third Level Administration from Boston College to visit third level institutions in Boston and Ann Arbor, Michigan.  This involves myself and 9 other academics from the north and south of Ireland visiting institutions in the United States during November 2011 to explore challenges and innovations in third level administration and share best practice.

2006 – 2008 - Project partner on FP6 Socrates project under the Minerva action worth over €300,000 involving a team of researchers throughout Europe.  This project was an investigation into the use of multiple intelligences in the delivery of virtual classrooms targeting health and safety in the construction industry.  A framework for deploying synchronous classes was formulated as part of this project.

2005 – 2007 - Project coordinator of a FP6 Socrates project proposal, which I formulated based on my doctoral research under the Minerva Action worth €237,000 involving a number of partners in Europe.  This project investigated how technology can be used to deliver continuing professional development in the construction industry.  A framework to inform educational providers how to deploy blended lifelong learning opportunities was developed and implemented.

2005 – Received Enterprise Ireland grant of €7,000 to visit Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane Australia and the Cooperative Research Centre for Construction Innovation (CRCCI).  This work involved developing training solutions related to the use of ICT in construction and building information modelling (BIM) focused on both undergraduate students and practitioners in the construction industry.  The findings from this work were integrated into developments in QUT and WIT.

Case Studies
Author of case study titled Scottish Parliament House in Edinburgh - A Unique Set of Circumstances accepted for publication by the European Case Clearing House in 2010.  The construction of the Scottish Parliament building was plagued by controversy from the start.  Some key challenges that were encountered on the project are described and the teaching note supports tutors in using the case in a classroom setting.
