Biography

I am a qualified Chartered Accountant since 1996 and joined WIT in 2004, having worked in industry and practice prior to this. My previous roles have included working as an auditor, financial consultant, financial controller and general manager across a range of organisations (large and small) and sectors. In 2002, I completed my MBA in WIT. In 2014, I graduated with a PhD from Dublin City University (supervisor: Professor Patrick C. Flood).

I am Course Leader for the Higher Diploma in Business in Management and Co-Course Leader (with Dr Seán Byrne) of the Doctorate in Business Administration in WIT.

My teaching primarily focuses on accounting and business-related subjects, at undergraduate, postgraduate and executive levels. Subjects include:

  • Financial reporting
  • Management accounting
  • Finance
  • Financial analysis
  • Strategy in an accounting context
  • Business management
  • Knowledge management
  • Managing change

My research interests are quite diverse, but my more recent focus has been on leadership, healthcare management, role theory, business failure, qualitative methods and producing teaching cases for students. I completed my PhD in 2014, which examined the managerial role of the GP (General Practitioner) and the implications of this.

I have co-authored/co-edited three books, addressing leadership, management and corporate governance.

I am involved in the supervision of students theses at Level 10 (PhD and DBA). I have been an internal examiner at Level 9 and 10 in WIT.

Along with my colleague, Dr Felicity Kelliher, I am a two-time winner (2008/2009) of the European Foundation for Management Development Case Writing Competition Award in the Public Sector Innovations Category. In 2010, we were also runners-up in the Irish National Management Case Study Competition. In 2008, I shared the Best Postgraduate Paper Award at the Irish Academy of Management Conference in Dublin City University. In 2021, I was nominated for the Research Supervisor Award in WIT.

I am the head of the Centre for Management Research in Healthcare and Healthcare Economics in WIT.

I am a member of the Irish Academy of Management (IAM) and I was co-chair of the Irish Academy of Management Conference in August 2021 (with Dr Collette Kirwan) which was hosted by WIT - see https://www.iamireland.ie/ for further information on the conference.

I am an editorial board member of the Irish Journal of Management. I have been a journal and conference reviewer for the Irish Journal of Management, the Journal of Health Organisation and Management, the Irish Business Journal, the Irish Academy of Management and the Organisational Behaviour in Healthcare Conference. I was a track chair at the Irish Academy of Management Conference in 2013 and a session chair at the Irish Accounting and Finance Association Conference in 2016.

I am currently an external examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate modules at Institute of Technology Tralee, and was previously an external examiner at Manchester Metropolitan University and Dublin Business School.

I am a former examiner for the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland (2002-2006).
