European, national and regional leaders have gathered in Waterford today for a high-level EU Presidency Associate Event examining how urban regeneration can help create more sustainable, inclusive and attractive places across Europe.
Hosted by the Southern Regional Assembly, Waterford City and County Council and SETU, the two-day event brings together policymakers, local authority leaders, academics, practitioners and representatives of European institutions to discuss the future of urban regeneration and the role of the New European Bauhaus in shaping communities and places.
Taking place at the historic Theatre Royal in the heart of Waterford City, the programme focuses on Ireland's experience of sustainable urban development, including THRIVE -Town Centre First Heritage Revival scheme, heritage-led regeneration and approaches to creating vibrant town and city centres. Delegates will also explore how collaboration with research and innovation departments in Higher Education Institutions can support future urban regeneration initiatives and contribute to wider European policy discussions.
"Waterford has undergone significant transformation in recent years through investment in regeneration, heritage and public realm projects. We are delighted to welcome delegates to the city and showcase how place-based regeneration can strengthen communities, support economic activity and enhance quality of life."
Mayor Liam Brazil Waterford City and County Council
"The challenges facing towns and cities across Europe require collaboration, innovation and practical solutions. This event provides an opportunity to share experiences, learn from one another and contribute to discussions on how urban regeneration can support sustainable and inclusive communities for the future."
Cllr Bobby O Connell Cathaoirleach, Southern Regional Assembly
“SETU is pleased to contribute to the European conversation by bringing New European Bauhaus principles to life through education, research and community engagement. As the only university in the south east, we want to empower students to shape the future of our communities. These principles also inform our campus developments, with capital projects such as Glassworks creating a space where innovation can flourish, SETU’s One Health agenda can thrive, and societal challenges can be addressed collectively.”
Professor Veronica Campbell President, South East Technological University
The programme includes keynote contributions from representatives of the European Commission, Government departments, local authorities and higher education institutions, alongside expert presentations, panel discussions and study visits to a number of Waterford's landmark regeneration and heritage projects.
As Ireland hosts this EU Presidency Associate Event, the discussions taking place in Waterford will help inform wider conversations on the future of urban regeneration, cohesion policy and the creation of places that are sustainable, inclusive and attractive for current and future generations.
