Direct student engagement with industry

Caoimhe was first introduced to Eaton when company representatives visited the University’s campus to speak to students on the Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Supply Chain Management. This allowed students to hear first-hand about Eaton’s work and to engage directly with the employer.

I chose Eaton because they had a strong relationship with SETU. It was great to hear the speakers talk about their company, their work, and their ethos. I wanted a work placement that would open doors and broaden my horizons, and it was clear that Eaton could offer great opportunity.

Caoimhe explained, “I expressed in my interview that I wanted to continuously progress. I have since learned that Eaton is a workplace where employees can move up the ladder quickly and are provided with the knowledge and skills to do so.”

Shared values and insights

With an already established interest in sustainability, Caoimhe found the company aligned well with her values and academic goals.

Caoimhe shared, “I had been aiming to write my thesis on sustainability, particularly in relation to sustainable procurement, which is one of Eaton’s main objective.”

Global experience

When speaking about the work she has covered to date with the company, Caoimhe said, “I’ve been working on a payment terms project. This project has involved daily meetings and consistent communication with my team members in India. I have gotten the chance to update files with vendor information, review contracts, update Eaton’s global procurement system, and ensure all data is represented accurately.”

Continuing she said, “It has been great to work with such a wide variety of people. I have been given the opportunity to broaden the scope of my work within the area of professional services and become more involved in the areas that interest me.”

My favourite part has been my involvement with contracts. My favourite module on the Supply Chain Management course was ‘Purchasing and Supplier Management’ has been hugely informative for this work as it focuses on negotiation. It has been invaluable to see this module come to life in my work with Eaton.

Speaking about the course, Caoimhe said, “The course material is so informative. Our class dynamic is collaborative and my classmates and I help each other out. Class sizes are small and so the support from lecturers has been great. They push us to do our best and have strengthened our understanding of the supply chain function.”

Hopes for the future

“I am currently in my fourth and final year of study at SETU so after I graduate, I hope to find a job in indirect procurement as a data analyst. From there, I hope to continue progressing into areas I enjoy working in such as marketing, human resource management, fleet, and travel.”

“My time at SETU, and the pathway it provided in terms of gaining experience at Eaton, has been invaluable. The fact that the University has a strong relationship with a global company that values nurturing the development of third level students and graduates has given me a great starting point in terms of professional experience,” she added.
